Premium Audio Upgrade for less than $250

If you go for kicker 6.75 with the metra mounting adaptor and use the kicker screws, the screws will pierce into the door. Because the Tacoma's original size is 6.5, so a 6.75's screw holes would line up with the outer perimeter of the speaker hole.

I had to file down the screws so that they would not damage my door.

The OEM rear speaker size is 6.5, so a 6.5 would work. You can just go for the kicker 6x9 fronts and 6.5 rear.

Also, if you are using a sub to power your speakers, then the stock headunit will underpower the rear speakers. Meaning the rears will have the least noticeable difference. So a 6.75s advantages over a 6.5 would be wasted on an unpowered stock HU.

I just ordered the tweeters, Kicker CS 6x9, and Kicker CS 6.75 but I'm wondering if the Kicker CS 6.5 would be an easier install in the rear door. Do you need to create new holes in the door to mount the 6.75 with the Crutchfield adapter? Would you need to create new holes if I just went with the 6.5? Thanks. Looking forward to getting everything installed!

 

no modification require for the 6.75 as long as you use the crutchfield supplied adapters

 

Crutchfield isn’t infallible, those will fit also as long as you use the supplied adapter

It's not as bad as you think.

Disconnect the battery. Remove bolt cover. Remove bolt. Remove pillar panel. Remove tweeter cover. Remove bolt. Remove tweeter. Install tweeter. Reverse steps. 1 hour later both sides are done.

I did mine in the morning while eating my eggs in between steps.

 

You don’t even touch the airbag. Thousands of people have bought the MESO puddle lights and those require you to remove that same pillar panel.

 

Lost count of how many times I have removed the A pillar trim.

Disconnect battery and remove the trim. Put everything back then reconnect the battery.

 

Just ordered the front and rear Kicker speakers from Crutchfield. Supposedly some kind of sale ending on Sunday and free shipping with 2 day delivery to my location finally pushed me over the edge. Well, that and this damned forum. Holding off on the Subaru/Kicker tweeters for now until I see how much improvement I get from just upgrading these. Probably get some sound deadening material to do the doors while it's apart. After all I've had the truck for almost 2 weeks now. I might even need to put gas in it soon.

Crutchfield order arrived Monday and I managed to get them installed last night after work. Incredible how light and cheap the OEM speakers are. I have bigger magnets on my refrigerator than that. I was going to Dynamat the doors while I had the panels off but wanted to get the speakers installed so perhaps that project might happen some other time. Still haven't decided if I want to drop the money for the tweeters but leaning that way. Upgrade of just the door speakers is a nice improvement over stock.

 

Just finished my install last night. Added the Dynamat Extreme as well. Really happy with how it sounds. Much clearer and more volume. But I did mess up on my rear passenger door handle so it won't open now. Headed to dealer to get it fixed...lol. Highly recommend this mod!

 

Did you do the tweeter as well? Debating it for now. I had to take access cab rear door panels off a second time as I had something binding up in my seat belt mechanisms. Not really sure what was binding but after removing and reinstalling I got it right.

 

Yes, I did the tweeters as well. The OP set us all up for success with this. It really does sound waaaaaaay better. And the tweeters are much more prominent in the mix now then they were before. If you listen to music while in your truck and the $250 is in your price range, there is no better mod. If you don't add the Dynamat, you could easily be done this in a couple hours for all 6 speakers. Just make sure you triple check those door latch cables when you reinstall! lol

 

Got mine all installed today. I did the tweeters last year but this took it to a whole other level. Pretty easy install overall. I did do some sound dampening so that took a little longer. Maybe 3 hours total. Easiest door panels I have ever taken off to be honest.
