I've only had my truck for 4 months and I've found quite a few uses for my large cubby and by the sounds of it, that's the only one anyone really used anyway and they all miss it.

My theory: They took it away so they could charge for it on upcoming models. I think the 2021 Tacoma Trail edition has lockers on each side -- storage lockers.

The new accountant driven business model is to take away any extras, build them into features of future models and charge a premium for what you once gave away for free.

Now, to be fair, these are not the same, of course. But it seems that's the idea.

You’re probably right about the take away/sell back later thought process.

As for that trail edition...is it even a truck with a bed at that point?

Regarding the OP’s complaint about the large compartment that they took away...I agree man, it’s complete BS. There’s already limited storage in these things and now they are taking away features that added storage space without taking up other usable storage areas. ...not to mention the 50 small cup holders that can’t hold anything when they should have just put 8 cup holders and actually been able to handle modern-sized beverage containers.

Mine holds a pump for my air bags with room to spare.

The teaser photos I've seen make me think it'll be something similar to RAM box storage. That or it'll just take up the dead space around the wheel wells.

It also looks like it'll just be an upgrade to the SR5 mod to make it more off road worthy without going into the TRD levels. I suspect it may come with a couple of off road features as well. But the blacked out TRD OR wheels it'll have look sick.

It held my trailer hitch. That took up all the room. It would not hold my jumper cables. That's not much room.

This is a hideous and wasteful destruction of available bed space. Some of us still haul loads of firewood, sheet rock, plywood, etc, etc, etc, etc. Compartments are fine and all, but should be removable and modular. It's obvious no Toyota engineer actually drives or uses a Tacoma like a truck.

My jumper cables are behind the rear seat. I don't really want those out where just anyone can get them, nor exposed to the elements. But, I've used it to hold rachet straps, bungee cords, para-cord, camping propane, and a multitude of other things on occasion.

Ha! You just wait. The 2022 will solve it by adding in the Honda Ridgeline trunk!

    I kid. I kid.

My drivers side compartment holds my ARB air hose well and the passenger side one fits a small first aid kit.

Honestly, that's the only part of the Ridgeline that I actually like.

They have to have something like that as a feature because their "bed" is all of like 3' from gate to cab lol. ::Vomits while bleeding from the eyes::

When I saw that for the first time, I contemplated on trading in my truck.
Then I remembered it was a Ridgeline and never looked backed.

Still, I would love to have that bed storage though.

Some of you acting like the Trail Edition is going to be the only option and that people who own Tacomas only ever use the full bed space

I used the cubby on my 2nd Gen to store a hitch, but the latches kept working themselves loose and the door would flop open. I don't have a tonneau cover now, so I don't miss the little extra bit of storage that would be a target for the less scrupulous.
I do have it earmarked for a possible air compressor location later.
