Is a manual Tacoma really “sought after”, rare or more valuable?

I own a 2010 6spd Pro-4x. Paid $20k for it in 2015 with just 30,000 miles on it and in excellent condition. I was skeptical having owned nothing but Toyota 4x4s but it's proven to be a great truck, can't believe I've had it nearly 6 years now.

I have nothing against frontiers, I think they are good trucks. My buddy had Nismo frontier and it was nice.

I actually quoted earlier in this thread that if Taco didnt offer MT, I would have went with the frontier MT. Millenial wise guy just likes to fuck with me sometimes.

funny you say that! I just got rid of my last Nissans, the wife’s Murano! What a pile! Found one of the last 4 Runners around my area. It’s a 2020 TRD OR premium. They really are built like a tank.

    this and that...
@2016Tacoman: i dunno how it was with carbureated engines, but kick start still works like a champ on my taco. the ONLY time it has never worked for me, and this is regardless of whatever was done, was my 2018 corolla se premium. that badboy had 6spd manual AND push start. i loved that car. the ultimate daily driver, but for whatever reason the push start system would simply not allow you to turn the car over. it would almost then kill itself and you would get some weird prompt on the hud. after that i told myself never again. its a good thing you cant get push start and manual trans on the taco, even if its just for that reason lol. i can see what you saying with the pocket sized jump start though. technology has advanced so much these past few years.

also another post mentioned earlier. i dont think i ever bought a car for myself with the consideration if my wife could drive it lol. every vehicle i buy for myself is basically for my enjoyment. if she likes a vehicle she can put it on a wish list and when we go car shopping we can go from there. works out better for us that way. she knows i like to drive so im basically her chauffeur lol, which i dont really mind anyhow.

There’s no way you should expect more money for a truck with a manual when the manual sells for less in the first place. Literal nonsense if people are telling you that. Buying the automatic from the dealer costs more money. If I was in the market for a used truck in a manual transmission, and the seller said “Yeah, I’m asking premium because it’s a manual”, I’d laugh and walk right off. Why not ask for more money because you have cloth seats while you are at it? The automatic transmission is a more expensive transmission.

Yeah, there’s people that look specifically for a MT6 and they are harder to find so that happens a lot. It took me a while to find a manual and the majority of the ones I found had a higher price tag. Not that I think they should but it was my recent experience. Also comparing it to cloth vs leather it’s apples to oranges. Driving manual vs auto is a different driving experience.

These manual trucks still aren't "rare" though, as they are still technically mass-produced. If someone that owns a manual is acting as if they have some rare special thing, they are kidding themself. When I picked my truck out on the lot (automatic), there were numerous manuals there as well, one of which I test drove. I sold my manual '13 JK in back in May. Most Wranglers now are automatic and it isn't even close. The thought of asking more for it because it was a manual never once crossed my mind.

Hmm my buyer was specifically looking for my a manual and paid more for it. I drove the truck for 3 years and sold it for what I bought it for. Not saying it’s a thing, but in my case it absolutely was. The dealer also wanted to buy it because they said they couldn’t consistently get their hands on one. This is in the Phoenix area, one of the largest metros in the country. Just a little perspective.

Like I said, that was my recent personal experience... I live in So Cal and was looking for over 3 months for a 4x4 Off Road M6 and could barely find them... Actually one Toyota dealer had a used (only 5K) Manual Cement OR 4x4 and was selling it for 37K... I tried to negotiate and they wouldn’t go down... 2 days later the listing was priced at 47K... I’m not even kidding... it was Longo Toyota. Needless to say I took my business elsewhere. I couldn’t find anything within reasonable distance and had to look nationwide and again the selection was minimal. Ended up buying in Scottsdale, AZ to get a good deal... This was my own experience, I don’t get why you sound so mad... Maybe you should’ve gotten a manual?

    That’s awesome! Good for you!:fistbump:

think the whole mt frontier comment is a dead end. for 2020 manual trans is discontinued. hopefully toyota doesnt toe the line and keeps mt a thing on tacomas. i dunno...but well see.

Rare would be a fair word seeing as less than 5% come in MT and they are highly sought after. I bought a used 2016 6MT and now 2020 6MT and found the look on the salesman's face hilarious the moment I uttered the words "Manual transmission". A couple dealers said they often sell before they are even listed as a result of being manual. Took me a little bit to get both of mine too. I have also heard of some dealers putting a premium on manual models. Manual RAM 2500's and 3500's are a prime example of this. I do however agree with what you are getting at. I don't view myself as a special little star because I have enough motor cortex power to move a stick around lol.

I bought my Taco when I did (beginning of April) because I wanted a MT OR 4x4. I got lucky and the exact truck I wanted was at a large dealership five minutes from my house.

My Taco is not my daily driver, if it were I might have gotten an automatic. I do think having a MT Taco is rare, but I doubt that will add to it’s value. I mainly wanted a MT because I bought this truck for driving in the mountains and off-roading, which are times when I prefer a MT.

I will admit that I like that my Taco is part of a small minority. I feel fine but it makes my truck feel special

I think stick shifts will always have a place for certain people but who knows as time goes by. Hopefully by then the surviving MT's value will go up.
