SR5 4x4 vs TRD Offroad 4x4

Maybe just me but i wouldn't pay extra for the off-road capabilities of the trd if never intending to use them. It already irritates me enough with all the electronic bs my sr5 has. I would of preferred to pay less if it didn't come this way. I've had 4wd sr5 for decades. The truck will do everything i ask of it. Were not big off-roaders here. Just need it for the winter roads.

 

Right the issue really is paying for something I don't need or will not use. However, the orange accent interior is nice to look at. I know to each is own, but I think I am leaning 4x4 SR5 if I can find one.

 

OP, it really boils down to what you really want/need. The OR has some amenities that the SR5 doesn't come with i.e. rear locker, crawl, different head unit, etc. If you don't need any of those things the SR5 is probably all you need. If I had to do it again and there was a significant price difference between the OR and SR5, I'd probably get the SR5 just for it's simplicity.

It looks like now days the price difference isn't all that much so you have to decide what you need/want to pay for. Life is short, so get whatever you like and will enjoy driving everyday.

 

I went OR because I wouldn’t settle for anything less. IMO, it’s the best looking truck behind the Pro. For obvious reasons (price), I wasn’t buying the Pro. Get what you want though man. If you just want the SR to look more aggressive, throw some bigger tires on it with a small lift and it instantly looks more “Off-Road” than a stock OR does.

 

Toyota should offer a rear locker as an option for the sr5.

I could live without literally every upgrade the trd has vs the sr5. I just want the locker.

 

Depends what you want. Where I live, a 2WD pickup is pointless so kudos for upgrading there. However, for me, anything less than a TRD Off Road was off the table. I wanted at minimum a rear locker and preferred to have crawl control (although I considered the manual which doesn't have crawl control). For me, I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Plus, I felt like I got a lot more bang for my buck going with the Off Road.

 

SR5 works for me.

 

A perfect example of what I was talking about above. Your SR5 looks more “Off-Road” than a stock TRD OR does.

 

I think even the SR comes with Carplay and Nav now. If I were to buy again it would be a red base model and then add the stuff I want.

 

The price difference between the 2 models is only about $1800, if they added a Locker Option it would cut a big chunk out of that difference.

 

I had an OR before with the E Locker and only used it once and it was not out of necessity.
My 4Runner had crawl control and I never used it.
Good tires and common sense are more valuable than a locker.
My truck cost 34k and is my only transportation so I'm not going to thrash it off road. Forest roads, beach, snow, if it looks to sketchy I turn around.

 

As far as the interior its exactly what i wanted...not having black seats since my 66 gto days, just didn't realize how hot in the summer black seats can get. That burn't orange really pops with those seats.

 

Where'd you get the grill?

 

To fair, those are mainly just cosmetics. Aftermarket look-alike TRD Pro grille, wheels/tires, and removing the front air dam. It doesn't necessarily mean it is more capable than before. However, it does look sweet!

 

and if you are refinancing for another 4-5 years then that is alot more..

 

i have a 16 SR5 that i love, no issues and runs great and for what i do, it is fine unless your doing something like the rubicon trail...then you don't need to spend the extra money especially if you have to refinance for more money...imho

Chose what you can afford mate.

You will get a lot of opinions how to save money on a purchase or avoiding how to spend more than you "need" to...money can always be recouped in other ways...some will mention how dicounted they got their trucks, and some will say how much they feel they over-paid...bottom line is majority of us love our trucks regardless.

 

Well I did it and yes there's one born every minute, I'm that guy. I got the TRD Offroad, it was a bit of a no brainer after I worked with the dealership a bit more. I will say my experience at Modern Toyota in Winston Salem NC (Mom Garner was my contact) was really good. I'll be happy to share details privately if anyone is interested.
