Undoing a lift

I found a low mileage, late model Tacoma, equipped like I want, at a reasonable price. Problem is, it is lifted. What kind of expense could I expect to lower it to stock?

 

Take it to a reputable local shop, or better yet, shop that knows lifting Tacoma's.
These folks around here know their lifts for sure, but I'd want hands on it. This is why I stay away from modified vehicles,,, you just never know.

 

I'm in the same boat here. Very hesitant to purchase a modified vehicle and always look for signs its been stocked out. Apparently I'm the odd one out of my friends though who think I'm wasting money modifying my own stuff.

 

You're not the only one, almost everyone has seen some shoddy shoddy shit/mods.
I have several buddies that are dealer techs, lots of horror stories about modded vehicles coming in, and owner being in the hook for hourly work, since the book doesn't account for work like this.

 

The truck is 100+ miles from here. Not sure it would be worth the trip to check it out. The list cost is several thousand below others in the area, but the potential cost of removing the lift might be problem. I understand blocks could raise the rear, but I would expect raising the front would be more complex. The wheels are not stock, so the tire size might be a problem. I'm thinking about looking elsewhere.

 

if its listed thousands under others in the area, I would personally proceed but with a lot of caution. Tacoma's seem to be in short supply (carvana thread) at the momment. But the fact that its listed that much under the market worries me. Or it could be someone who doesn't care and just wants it gone ASAP. I think it would be worth asking for more details about the lift. What kind, who installed it, etc. before deciding if you want to drive 100+ miles to see it in person.

 

This is from a dealer, not a Toyota dealer, tho. I would expect them to know what they have. Think I will spend a few bucks more and look elsewhere. Sure is tempting, tho.

 

You could always price what a replacement lift would cost and that would probably give you an idea of what it will cost to go back to stock. Roughly...

It is possible that it is cheaper due to it being modified. Dealers do not like modded vehicles and will offer less at trade in due to mods. This might be one of those cases where the original owner did not have the parts to return to stock and the dealer not being a Toyota dealer unfamiliar with returning it to stock. Who knows for sure but it might be worth taking the trip and crawling under. I’m sure you could also find plenty of stock parts from this forum alone on the cheap.

if its lifted just 4 the looks at the mall....& hooters

U could leave well enuf alone & ride or

make list of parts + cost to make it stock again

if its been lifted for off road thrown to the bush & rocks

Ur concern expands to how its been used & banged around

take the time to check it out

armor all & chrome dont make a good truck

 

OP. If you are not into or unfamiliar with lifted vehicles, I would play it safe, keep looking elsewhere for your truck. Skip the lifted one.

 

If you’re looking at purchasing, surely the dealer could send a salesman out to take a few suspension photos and text them back to you! Who knows maybe it has kings... maybe it has spacers... you’ll only know if you ask.

 

Also, FWIW - I bought my tacoma with a 3” body lift on it... price was right and one owner with very few miles. Had a mechanic buddy remove the body lift and never looked back.
