Or the worst is when the bottle gets crusty residue on it that's congealed in the refrigerator for weeks/months and that gets on your food

Tucson varies wildly. The Chevron I use is at around $2.40-50 for 89, aka mid-grade. That's what I usually run. 87 is probably around $2.20ish.

I always wondered who used mid-grade, figured they just offered it because it costs them nothing, not because anyone needed or wanted it.

I thought it existed for people with vehicles that recommend 91+ but they're too cheap to buy 91+, so they buy 89 and feel like they're not as cheap as those 87 octane consumers

My Maximas always said you must use 91+ but in the manual it says that's just for max performance and MPG, it'll be fine and retard its timing on 87. So I guess you could cheap out and run mid-grade and feel some performance and mpg increase haha. I'm happy my two current vehicles are 9.0:1 and 9.5:1 compression, they don't give a shit about 87 and won't gain anything with 91+

I've used it for years. I think I read on bobtheoilguy forum that midgrade is usually the more consistent quality gas since it all comes from the same hose/pump. There's always a gallon or so of whichever gas was pumped last remaining in the hose or something. 87 tends to have detonation issues in higher heat areas like here in Tucson. I have less or no issues with detonation running midgrade/89.

Only thing that I consistently run 91 in is my big KTM street bike. Tried 89 in it and the mpg dropped significantly enough for me to notice and go back to 91.

yeah there are definitely applications where it makes a difference, if I run less than 91 I'll be in trouble

For the general unknowing/uncaring public though I think it's mostly a marketing thing for the gas companies to make more money. They all push the idea that the higher the octane the "more" it's doing for your engine to keep it clean and healthy, when really it's just about getting people to buy more expensive gas than they need to lol.

Chinaman Gulch, I remember that name. I've had to have wheeled through there or close to there. That by Ouray or telluride or those mountains?

Yeah, running the supercharger on your motor, you definitely need to run 91. Maybe even add some octane booster or methanol when it get's really hot outside.

The 2uz seems to have been happy running 89 so far. Maybe I'll try a few tanks of 91 and see if the mpg gets a boost from it.
