Good as the FJ40 is, no way would I drop more than $30K for a resto.

This is another example of a classic vehicle ruined by exploiters. I don't care how good the restoration is; there are few things that need to be added to a Land Cruiser of that era that would make it better for its intended use than it already was/is. Even if half the body was rusted out, it shouldn't be that costly to refurb one that is already in running condition. It don't need no back-up camera, the damn thing is short enough you can see the license tag from the driver seat by swinging your head around. It don't need no fancy interior, just something to ruin the first time you bury it in a mud hole or cross the Mississippi River in it. They just want to sell you the ultimate mall crawler.

And if I wanted an engine different from the straight six (2F??) that came in it originally, I'd want either a SBC or a big 4-cyl diesel. I bought my 1976 FJ40 new (see my avatar), paid $5700 for it, abused the total shit out of it and it kept asking for more. I put 95K on it in 7 years before finally pinching a hole in the oil pan on an outing and losing my oil on the way home, spun a big-end bearing. I was in school, paying my own way, couldn't afford the repair, and sold it. Biggest mistake I ever made.

Not the Mississippi, but the Linville River in NC, at the southern end of Linville Gorge, back in 1977:

They realize that many people buy 400K Ferraris, never drive them, then sell them 4 yrs. later for 1/2 price. If you charge enough, ridiculous goes full circle.

I like them, but not enough to spend that much on one.

Here's one a member posted a while back:

For $190k you could buy a used FJ and restore it, a Tacoma, a car, a small house (in Louisiana), beer, blow, hookers and go on vacation for a year (depending on the hookers).

In my 20's I did something very similar minus the FJ, Tacoma and house and vacation, but it seemed like a vacation.

That is sweet, fixed up just like I'd want if it were mine. I'll bet though, the worst terrain it's seen is the speed bumps at the Walmart. I'm incredibly suspicious of a vehicle like that without a dinged fender or speck of dirt on the underbody. And it will never see water any deeper than what's in a pothole on the boulevard, so shitcan the snorkel. I don't think mine was that clean even in the showroom, and I know it wasn't as clean after I bought it.

That's just...nasty. At least its "snorkel" is functional.

Looks like a Skid vehicle that you would find at the Summer Nats

The finest and most valuable restoration would be one brought totally back to 100% original.
