Sound Deadening/Isolation - Headliner

How much product (thickness) can I fit on the roof behind the headliner?

I was looking at 80 mil butyl sound deadening + 315 mil sound isolation heat/cool closed cell foam. I did 50 mil + 157 mil of those on my doors, floor, rear cab wall, but that was a while ago and I can't remember how thick that was, but it seems to me it'd add up with regards to the headliner.

If not that option, what's the best bang for my buck? I will ONLY be doing the headliner at this time as the rest of the truck is pretty well squared away, so I only need ~20 -25 sq ft of material.

Not sure how much room you have, but neoprene can be bought in multiple thicknesses, works as a thermal insulator and is compressible if the fit is tight. It isn't going to block a crazy amount of noise, but it also works as a decoupler and can cut down on rattles.

 

Excellent. I have that same foam insulation on my doors, but it's now unavailable. Looks like the replacement option is thicker. Wasn't sure how thick would be too thick.

There’s about 3/4- 1 inch of space between the roof skin and the headliner. Obviously less space at the support ribs or brackets for the so glass holder and dome light so you have plenty of room for insulation.

Tessa taped all the wires in the headliner because I pulled them all out of the hotglue material that was holding them down

Thanks a bunch for the links. Was the 16 sq ft. of insulation pad enough to cover the roof? I have some sound deadener lying around, so I might be able to get away with just buying a little extra if that's all I need. I'm trying to avoid having a ton of excess material if I can avoid it.

 

Yeah I actually ordered two sheets of that because my initial thought was to do full coverage. But after dropping the headliner I realized that you can’t really do it because of clearance issues (you would be pressing pretty hard to get the headliner back up flush) so I ended up only using most of one of the sheets. But I plan on doing the back panel behind the back row (I have a DCSB) so the left over and the extra whole sheet should be enough.

 

1. Why Tessa tape instead of hot glue? I have both so i'm wondering if i should use Tessa Tape as well
2. Does Noico Closed Cell Foam work i have 150 mil and 315 mil
3. How vital is the taping of the seams bc i read that in the noico manual but it ended up being a pain in the ass. plus it was absurdly expensive. any suggestions on a cheaper brand?

Also, I have MLV do you think that would fit as well or instead of one of the other things

My plan is to do the headliner next. I dont have to much sound leakage so i can bump as loud as i want but it's still bleeds enough that i want to do more

How much of a Difference does doing the headliner make?
