Sooo... yep... my fucking luck.

Started hearing a but of a howling noise from the back last week. Had already scheduled an alignment for today. Had my (trusted) mechanic check and verify what I already expected.

Blown bearings in rear axle.

Trip is...

 

Ya, it fucking sucks... but it'll just push us back a couple weeks.

Which bearing? Are you going to repair yourself or have the shop do it?

 

Not sure which side, but rear axle. As loud as it has become, it may be both sides. Just started making the howling noise last week. (Wed or Thurs, can't remember)

Had it scheduled for an alignment and A/C charge. Asked him to look at it for me. It's definately a bad bearing.

The cost of labor would cover the cost of the tools necessary. And it's time for me to grow the fuck up and buy my own press anyway.

 

I’m planning on doing all mine this winter. They’re all original and I’d rather have the piece of mind on them being done. Plus I need to add rear disc brakes and that’ll kind of snowball the job more.

FWIW, back in VA, I always took my press work to a head shop and they would do it super cheap. If you’re not sold on a press yet, maybe give a local head shop a call and see if they can do some pressing for you on the cheap.

Well... if I buy a press I'll be able to do this job myself... AND help my buddies with 4Runners that need to press bearings when they are installing rear disc brakes... right?

 

My Pops is running a harbor freight press with a hydraulic ram he bought somewhere else (the ram the press came with didn’t last very long) and it’s done everything we‘ve asked it to do. Including coil suspensions. Definitely very nice to have access too.

 

I mean I’m never one to say no to a good time.

But seriously... as I get further and further in to this rabbit hole we call "Froading" I need to have the tools to keep the truck going. And if I can accumulate the tools that help my buddies out, even better.

And I feel bad asking @foxrcing07 every time my dumbass fucks a bearing up lol.

 

I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m not running the rubicon this year :/

And I’ve got a long laundry list of shit to do over the fall/winter to be able to run it next year.
It’s not that I don’t think I can make it through, it’s that I want to know I’ll make it through with no problems.
So whenever you want to work on shit, let me know. As long as we don’t have a hike, backpacking, or biking trip planned - I’m game
