    Hello everyone,

Since this is my first post, I am doing a bit of an introduction of my Tacoma. I recently bought a used 2012 4-cyl Tacoma with just 100.000 miles on it. The previous owner bought it brand new back from the dealer, so this makes me the second owner. I have been with this truck for about 2 months, but I have done a full car tune up with quality spark plugs and KN air filter etc, but I am concerned with the following issue:

Does my Tacoma 2nd gen 2012 4cyl 2.7 have a speed governor at 80/85 miles per hour?

The reason why I am asking is because this is the second time that I have been on a long distance drive and my truck loses power when I pushed it to 5 out of 7 RPMX1000s (The 5 is not on the red (warning) mark). This happens when changing to the fast lane. When I accelerate and push the engine, the truck loses all its acceleration. Therefore, I need to move over to the emergency lane, stop completely and the engine starts shaking, until I turn it off. Once I turn it back on, the truck works just as fine as before, but the check engine light stayed on.

The first time it happened, the code read was P506 and my mechanic took care of it, but he said possibly P0302 (Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected ) and P0303 (Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected) could be an issue too.

Is it safe to say that these codes are the cause of the power lost or does my tacoma have a speed governor? I am just wondering if my tacoma does have a speed governor at all? If it the misfiring is causing it would this be expensive to take care of?

Thank you guys for the help!

Yes the misfires are the source of your power loss more than likely. What spark plugs did you use when you replaced the old ones?

Speed governor is at 105 on my truck

Well if it had a speed governor it wouldn't be throwing codes. The 2.7 can do 100 without issue (well acceleration is an issue but that's besides the point). Sounds like something else is amiss. Did it do that before you swapped the kn filter in? Sometimes those are ladden with filter oil that grease up the maf.

I would work through the basics, and starting where man last touched the machine as more often than not that's the root cause. So check your work, what spark plugs, clean the maf, check for any lose vacuum hoses, make sure coils are seated properly, spark plugs arent any Bosch AutoZone special, torqued properly, etc

Edit: also something as innocuous as where you bought the spark plugs can be an issue. Amazon and eBay are no longer trustworthy as more than once folks have gotten legit looking parts that are counterfeit. These days you honestly can't tell the difference between knockoffs and legitimate parts, the only way to be safe is through and authorized distributor that doesn't also fulfill orders for 3rd parties like Amazon

mis fire would be the coils not the plugs. assuming the plugs are new and the right ones.

I second the oiled air filters. I had a KN and it messed up my mass airflow sensor and allowed an excessive amount of dirt into my engine to which i had to take to Toyota to pump with special machine to the tune of $700.

I now use OEM paper filters and OEM spark plugs.

OEM parts are just better ive found out the hard way thinking im saving a few bucks but in the long run spending more to fix issues that occurred using cheaper aftermarket knockoffs

First of all, I want to thank you for the quick responses.

The first time I felt the truck losing power, I had not done the tune-up yet. Therefore, it had OEM parts (denso Spark plugs etc) and that's when I got the codes originally. But even after the tune up with the Nk air filter, mobile one oil and filter, and NGK Laser Iridium 4094 spark plugs, the same issue happened. Which makes me think nor the spark plug or the air/oil filter have anything to do with it, right?

If replacing the plugs didn't do anything to correct your misfire, my money is on the coil pack.

Sounds like you've got a coil pack on its way out.

I have never hit a governor in any car. I am curious to know how that looks like?

Well, it still seems that mine shouldn't have any problems at 85 miles per hour. So that is probably due to the misfires. I bought online a code reader to see if I get them same codes as before or what happened this time. I'll keep you guys posted once I get the new codes.

There was a catalytic converter recall TSB on some of the trucks (my 2013 had it done by the dealer) so you might want to check and see if that applies to your truck and see if it was done. It could be a converter problem leading to the misfires after a high rpm blast.

the 2.7 engine will only go so fast / most engines can be computer limited

the new 3rd gen 2019 IS speed limited in reverse

if Ur 2.7 is throwing codes
its entirely possible the ECU is retarding the ignition a direct result to ' MISfires '

' MISfires ' typically happen when load/speed exceed proper cylinder firing
the ECU will pull back ignition timing to avoid engine damage

    proper installation of spark plugs
good gas.........octane not the only factor
    adequate & consistent compression
    all are factors to consider

    good luck
