Can my Taco tow it???

4500-5000 rpm sustained seems rather excessive to me. I would likely shift up or slow down before doing that to my truck.

 

5000 rpm is fine as long as it's not over heating

 

Well after discussing with my wife... she felt uneasy with the drive back. So I’m upgrading to a GMC Sierra All-Terrain. I think I’m getting a pretty good deal lol but it will definitely tow the boat and feel much more stable on the highway. I’m going to miss my Taco more than any other truck but my family’s safety is probably more important. Plus after being as cramped as we were in the car with two kids I’m not going to complain about more space lol.

Know that, eventually, you'll be back though. When you have cycled through all of the big boy toys that come as rites of passage of growing up as you grow old, when in your better-informed old age you realize that a smaller boat will do 90% of what the big boats you previously owned could do and 100% of everything you ever actually did in those larger boats, and that a smaller boat is easier to own and maintain, and tow with a Taco, you just may get back here. We'll keep a light on for you!

Will, one last thing: Two out of five boat accidents produce fatalities, and few are not serious. Most are bad, and almost all involve litigation afterward. You referenced nineteen person capacity. If you intend to have friends on that boat, as an insurance agent I recommend that you purchase maximum liability coverage as part of your boat policy. Then get an umbrella/excess liability policy. Then take a safety course from a power squadron. That'll help make you more defendable, and might even prevent something from occurring. Shit goes south quick when you are having fun on the water. Again ask me how I know: my next door neighbor was killed tubing on the river. Nope, not me. His sister was pulling him.

 

What are you basing that opinion on? I can’t refute it, but in general higher rpm leads to higher piston speeds which leads to greater stress on the engine components. I don’t mind reviving my truck up to 5000 rpm when entering the freeway while towing my 2300 lb boat, but I would feel concerned if I was running it at that rpm for hours. The noise alone would annoy me. I’m also confused why it is necessary with a 3500 lb boat. Perhaps it is super non-aerodynamic?

smart move. we moved from the tacoma to a gmc sierra with the 6.2 and max tow package.. biggest thing was we needed more room and more payload. the difference that the sierra made towing was worth it alone. the added room is awesome as well. much more comfortable on trips. that tacoma which i never self unsafe in while towing just wore me out on trips towing our travel trailer. i didn't realize it at the time but once i towed with the proper size truck i noticed big time. a lot of it could have been seeing and hearing that engine scream at 4-4500 rpm for so long or taking a mile to get up to speed. who knows, all i know is the full size truck is just so much more relaxing to tow with. good luck with the new truck and boat.

 

4500-5000 rpm sustained cruising would be excessive but for pulling hills it’s not going to hurt anything.

 

It might not blow up, but that much stress on on the drive train for hours seems like a recipe for early failure. At the very least the noise alone would drive me crazy. I think I would slow down, shift up, or buy a different truck (or a different boat).

Our camp trailer is just over 3000lbs empty, probably close to 3500 full of water and camping gear. Truck tows it just fine, even over the Willamette pass in Oregon, which climbs over 5000ft.
4th gear on flats, 3rd gear on any kind of hill, only hit 2nd gear on the steepest sections of the pass. Average's between 9 and 11 mpg.

I need to upgrade to the full RXT leaf pack, but other than that I'm happy.
You should be able to tow your boat not problem, but you will need a brake controller and something to help out the rear end sag. Ideally a new leaf pack.

 

I don't live near mountains, but I think we have ~5% slopes on the hiways here and I don't remember needing to ever rev the engine to 5000 rpm to get up any of them. It tows the boat fairly effortlessly unless there is a strong headwind, I leave the top off, or I exceed about 70mph. I can definitely feel the boat back there, but it's not like I need to rev the piss out of it. It will even shift into 6 under ideal conditions. My boat and trailer are 1000 lbs lighter though (~2300 lbs combined). BTW, is 3500 lbs the weight of the boat alone or the boat and trailer combined?

 

Definitely regear...it's necessary. Absolutely. Tell your wife that.

 

Mine is about 3700 dry and im doing 5th gear on flat at 60 65mph and 3rd n 4th on hills 40 55mph depending on how steap the hills are.

 

This is the sweet spot for this truck. Roughly half of the max 6800 pounds. Less is more.

Every pundit, youtuber, reviewer has said that towing in the upper limits of the max towing is not comfortable.
5000 to 6000 RPM sustained mile after mile hour after hour is "not acceptable".
It's excessive wear and you will get basically 5 to 6 miles per gallon or less. The 6800 pound towing capacity is really for short hauls.
TT hauling is long distance cruising.

 

You either have a stock truck, or one that has ghost turbos.
It is not recommended to tow in 5th.
