So best way I've heard this described is like this.

GMRS and CB the license for the FCC is with the radio and thus limit the output to 1.5 watts

Ham on the other hand the FCC license is with the user and thus the output of the radios can be higher.

The radio I have is 15 watts. The MTX400 is 40 watts

Damn govt and their meddling. It wouldn’t be this complicated if they weren’t involved and regulating stuff.

I beleive a stock FCC compliant CB is 4 watts. Standard FRS radios are 1/2 watt....i think.
GMRS when on low power (channels 1-7) are limited to 5 watts and GMRS high power (channels 15-22) are limited to 50 watts.

Seems like over 5 watts requires a liscence.

So shit now I'm really confused so what is the test for the Ham? For just the paid license it's gotta be a FRS&GMRS??? What are the differences this just makes it even worse to try and navigate and not get the feds after you

This all this. The rest is all confusing. I had CB and played with CBs all this new stuff is confusing to me. Back in the day HAM was a rich mans game now it's for the masses. I'd just go get the CB peak & tuned then grab a few amps and run a Wilson 40 whip and hello long range talking capabilities

I have a dual fuel Coleman stove somewhere. Still new in the box.

I could bring my new Ooni pizza oven and make some bomb ass pizzas. It burns wood for fuel, and there is no shortage of that in the woods
