Hey Folks...I submit to the collective wisdom of tacomaworld. Lemme know which one you advise me to buy! Thanks in advance.

    Usage: DD + off-road
-- As DD, I work mainly from home and don't put on a lot of mileage; ideal setup is diamondback hd so I can secure gear, haul easily, good visibility for trailer maneuvering
-- As off-road, mainly camping with family in Intermountain West, want access to more out-of-the-way spots, no rock crawling and I'll drive around it if I can, but it'd be nice to head up that road with confidence and explore a better site.

Cosmetic preferences: None except I don't want a black truck. It's all about function for me. I couldn't care less about looks.

    Choice #1: White DCLB 2016 TRD Off-road built 42K mileage $36.7 out-the-door
Excellent condition except for professionally repaired damage above rock slider (done before slider put in); no rust, single owner, superb carfax; includes:
ICON 3in adjustable suspension lift w/ tubular upper control arms with only 1,200 miles on it. ($5,000 kit).
    Window tint ($450).
    Clear bra paint protection ($600).
    Rock sliders ($1,200).
    TRD Offroad skid plate ($550).
    Rubber bed mat ($200).
    All weather mats ($190).
    K&N air filter ($70).
    BFG AT KO2 tires w/ 6k miles ($1,800).
    17in TRD off-road wheels ($900).
Premium Leer topper (100qx, I think) with pop out windows/screens, LED interior lights and keyless entry ($4,700).
    Tacoma PRO Grille ($400)
    Off-Road Mudflaps ($150)
As for package options, according to the owner, it's like a 2016 Pro without suspension, leather seats, seat heaters. Has keyless ignition, etc. Flawless interior.

Pro: Confident off-roader with tires better than stock; ready to go; armor is about right for my uses; I really hate buying anything new but I know Tacos are different; it's not totally right for me but maybe close and that makes it sort of a deal

Con: Only $3k less than new so in 4 years resale difference between 2016 and 2020 is more significant, even for a Tacoma; it's more suspension and clearance than I envision right now, and I could add it later; I'd probably end up selling the topper to buy a diamondback but I could also live with the cap for a while.

    Choice #2: White DCLB 2020 TRD Off-road (new) $39,700 out-the-door
Only package is mats/sills. Otherwise, it's as basic as it gets.

Pro: Warranty; no packages of questionable value and that I don't want (like tech); can build according to my needs and learn as I go

Con: Immediately need to add $2k for that diamondback hd; next buy would be light skid plates (fuller than the TRD Pro) and basic slider, another $1500-$2000; like I said, I hate buying new anything.

Agree with Walt. I'd take the brand new truck for a few grand more versus a truck approaching 50k miles.

Option 2 for me. I was thinking through while reading #1, "nice, but its almost the price of a new one"

I’ll go against the grain here and say truck #1. It’s really nice to not have to buy mods, and the mileage is nothing. A few years down the road the resale difference, granted they are still in good condition, and you have modded truck #2, won’t be greater than 3 grand, and you can kiss that 3 grand and more away the second you drive off the lot. Truck #1 all the way.

In a used car market accessories are almost never counted, especially at a full MSRP. Get a brand new truck with better transmission software and mod it to your liking.

2, I personally would never get anything that has been lifted, modded, etc... Never know who did the work and what they did with the work. Too many unknowns to spend my hard earned cash on.

Coming soon: Compact powered sub install Future mods planned: bigger tires (265/75/16) BILLSTIEN 5100 lift
I'd say if you value having a turn key deal with the mod done for you. truck # 1
if a warranty and knowing what was done to it then truck #2

It's not about what the interwebs think is best it's about what is important to you the consumer.

    No-brainer, #2
Mods have little to no resale, except for maybe the top.
BTW: TW pays less than $100 shipped for the bed mat, just because someone overpaid doesn't mean you need to also. I'd double check the other pricing.

I'd rather get the truck with the warranty...

But "Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time."

Number 2...but unless you HAVE to buy a truck today - I believe you can get a better deal on #2 (not that specific one but another new one) later non when inventories are back up...supply and demand. Good luck

    Like, so many.
Yeah, I'd go new here as well. You can mod it as you see fit along the way. Although, if the price on the used one was a few thousand lower, it would be an interesting decision.

Any basic 4WD Tacoma would do you fine for your stated purpose, you don't necessarily need the Off Road trim unless you want it. I'd vote for any 2020+ because it has more base amenities, especially features that make DD much more comfortable.

Also I just don't trust anyone else going through and messing with everything listed on #1. If you don't care about looks and aren't rock crawling, I'd completely disregard that truck entirely. Plus it's over-priced.

#2 here as well. The accessories add up if buying them but the truck is 4 almost 5 model years old.....
