Carvana is not necessarily the best thing since sliced bread but just emblematic of the Tacoma market in general. At the bottom of the Carvana offer they show you their version of the kbb trade in value which is deflated from actual kbb value(by $800 in my case). These are screenshots I just took valuing my 2016.
KBB trade in value, Carvana KBB value, KBB Private party value.

I sent my carvana quote to every dealer in the area just to see if they would match it and they basically told me good luck lol

Bout to say, no dealer is touching Carvanas offer. Carvana is purposely offering more to steal their used car inventory pool. Dealers also laughed at the Carvana quote and wouldn’t come within even 2k of it on their end.

Same here, I tried many dealers and CarMax...all basically said Carvana is offering more than they would list it for sale. Their offer was fairly close to private party value without having to deal with low ballers, easy decision.

I think part of the problem with that is that dealers are currently in a situation where they don’t have to make any sort of remotely good deal whatsoever to be able to sell The very few Tacomas they have. So giving you a fair deal such as the Carvana offer would be giving you a “deal” whereas they will probably find someone else who is willing to come in and take less than trade in value in order to get that Tacoma. The dealers only card they are holding is that they are the gatekeepers of the limited new Tacoma stock. Also, are you trying to get the carVana offer matched in addition to a percentage off MSRP? Because then you would be trying to get them to make a deal on both sides which would be even less of a reason for them to deal.

Yeah, I guess the algorithm varies widely as well. Mine was $2500 less than private party

I don't understand the strategy unless if they are just doing it for specific car models they know will be high in demand.
You can't buy all of the used cars in the world.

A dealer near me beat Carvana by $300, and took $3000 off MSRP. Except I wasn’t trying to trade it in on a new Tacoma :p

Hopefully, most here know that "trade value" is different than "cash value".
Dealers can't touch Carvana's cash value.
Dealers can crush Carvana's 'trade value' since all they have to do is clip you more for the vehicle you are trading for.

    To wit:

You get a local dealer to beat the Carvana quote, BUT it is going to be predicated on a trade. All they did was tack on that higher "value" to the price of the vehicle you are buying.

No dealer will write you out a check for the "value" they have put on your trade. Why? Because it is fake value ;-) Try it! Go to a dealer and work a trade on a new vehicle. Once the numbers are good, tell them "Nah, I just want to sell to you, without buying". See what the numbers are on the check they write compared to the numbers they would give you on a trade.

I have a new value from Carvana on my truck, it is a tick under $25,000. Almost two years old, over 17,000 miles and it is a SR Access Cab. There isn't a dealer in New England (I've called and emailed) that got within a couple of grand of that number.

That is how it usually works. If you wanted to trade for a new one it would be the other way around. lol

My 2019 SR 2.7 with 3400 miles on it I sold last December for $21,000. People around here want 4x4 double cabs. I did go back 6 weeks later and bought my truck back for a extra $1500.

My experience was pre-covid, on a 2nd gen, so context was a little different. Pitched my truck to 4 different dealers, all came in about the same on offer. Car max pushed that about 1k higher and Carvana came in about 2-2.5k higher. No one cared to price match. Which is something I found out about the local dealership culture. No one cared to price match, no one gave time a day to haggle anything off the price, etc.

Maybe it was the area, or maybe the used market at the time, idk. Funny thing is if I had waited and sold to Carvana now, they’d have essentially offered me full private sale price, but eh what can you do lol.

Did KBB for sh!ts and giggles and their offer was about 2k more than Carvana.
Now, should I take a day or two and remove black housing headlights, rear taillights w/Meso stage 1, window visors, etc.??
Those kind of mods dont do anything for value, right? Tonneau cover and side steps have to stay with the truck

I had no idea KBB would purchase your vehicle. Is that nationwide?

Reset what you can to stock and sell the aftermarket stuff separate. They don’t pay any extra for those items. Especially if it’s not included in your price offer.

    also kbb is buying cars?
