What are the benefits of the archive hangers, other than more protection in drops and a little more droop? Why not a shackle flip? I plan on doing Chevy 63s and 12" shocks in the future.

So i've got Eric's shackle flip right now and while it gives you more lift it seems to bottom out way sooner than with a shackle drop. My Deaver 539/540's hit on the shackle flip probably before they should...

So far, everything I've seen is that unless you're wheeling hard all the time, the flip isn't worth it on its own. I think the archive hangers are better for DDs if you aren't doing the 63s. Guess I should start pinching the pennies now for 63s...

Unrelated but since you asked about a larger trans cooler earlier I forgot to mention that you should then consider bypassing the radiator. That way no internal failure (from overheating or off-road shenanigans) can contaminate your ATF and wreck your transmission

For me it was keeping the tires on the ground. Tires on the ground = more traction. The ass end flexes way better with the shackle flip than the factory configuration. I noticed that I would be lifting a tire in the rear in situations that with the flip, it allowed the tire to stay on the ground. Ultimately it allows for more down travel, but you need to have the bump stops set up correctly to prevent the shock from bottoming out and minimize leaf inversion. Sacrifice up travel for down travel. I don't go bombing through the desert at 80mph so I'm fine with a little less up travel for down travel.

Yeah I think that's the only negatives I read is that the leafs can invert and the shocks will bottom out if you dont put in the bump stops. Longer shackles might need limiting straps on the shocks too. I also read that it rides worse on the street? I too am not bombing down desert roads so I don't have a need for much more up travel. I don't carry any weight in the bed either except for home depot and camping trips.

Yeah the ride is a bit different, but if you've driven any of the older Toyota pickups pre 2004 it's not any different. I haven't found the bottom of my shocks yet, so I haven't need to strap the axle, the shackle so far has been the limit strap. I definitely had to setup the bumps to keep the shocks from topping out.

Oh I also triangulated the rear shocks inboard and moved them higher, so I'm running a longer shock too

You have bottoming our and topping out backwards I believe.
I hate shackle flips and I wouldn’t want to sacrifice any uptravel because these trucks already have too little of it. Shackle flip will also cause tour leaves to invert much more which will cause them to wear out quick

Yeah you're right I did have that backwards. Top out is when the shock completely extends and tops out at the top of the shock body acting like a limit strap, bottom out would be when you fully compress the shock and it quickly becomes a bump stop.

If you setup the shackle mount correctly, shackle inversion shouldn't be an issue. With shorter leaf packs like the dakars, it will want to pull that shackle forward to invert. Moving the mount an inch or so forward fixed that for me.

Got some new goodies for the Lexus. Got rid of the wood panels next to the radio. Installed pieces from the Prado. Mainly because the tabs that hold them to the dash were broken and they stuck up bout a 1/4” above the dash. Also brand new ones from Lexus are $1k each. I got both sides from eBay shipped from uae in 5 days for $174. And they are genuine Toyota parts

I think the big thing is so many people here still DD/weekend their trucks and a straight flip sucks. The stock position on the frame with a flip has terrible geometry. If you do a flip it’s better to move the hanger forward and check your angles. Yes you loose a bit of bump travel and gain droop, which means you can kinda get tippy as one side will droop further than you can stuff the other. I personally run a flip kit, but it’s not just a bolt on thing. It takes a good day or two to cycle and set it up, but the kicker is most leaf packs are made for inverted hangers in stock locations. So it’s better to build your own bastard pack or run 63s than it is to buy a pack off the shelves that fit a taco. This is why so many people complain about vibes after flips because their pinion angles become shitty. Honestly both are a good option it just depends how much time you want to put in it.
