New here so play nice. There might me a thread about this already but could find anything.
Got my 2017 OR that just started shifting really bad after being stopped at a light and when you push the gas it doesn’t seem to want to move then it will just slam into gear. Yesterday it threw the a code and I had it checks at the parts store it was. P0746 and P2714”P0746 pressure solenoid “A” stuck. So I took it to the dealer this morning and was told the transmission is shot and needs replaced @ a cost of $5100. The truck only has 40,000 miles but isn’t covered under the 60,000 mile warranty because it is a bonded title. They told me the oil level and color are good. I just have a hard time believing that a truck that has never pulled a trailer or been stuck in mud or snow could have a bad trans at 40,000 miles. If anyone has any experience in this help me out. Could I just change the valve body and fix the problem or am I better off going to a transmission repair shop?

What is a Bonded title? Is that another term for totaled/ salvage title that has no manufacturer warranty.

Get another opinion, take it to an independent shop. I've seen multiple posts of 3rd Generation Tacoma's with underfilled transmissions from the factory. Could be as simple as low fluid. Was it flood damaged, start with a transmission fluid change.

Welcome to the forum. You have several options that are cheaper than $5,100. First option is as mentioned by checking out independent transmission repair shops, second option is to get a transmission from a wrecking yard. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you, yes we are taking it tomorrow to a transmission shop to get another opinion. And yes bonded is salvaged title. When bonded the repair shop has to use certified Toyota parts. This truck had front end damage driver side fender and crush tubes bumper, grill hood Things like that. Wasn’t flooded. The shop we bought it from has a very good reputation for solid rebuilds on Tacoma’s. Definitely not what where the damage came from. We have owed the truck for almost 2 years. It only had 8,000 miles when we bought it. This is the first and only problem we have had with it. “ knock on wood”.

In my area, Salvage yard Transmissions for your truck are in the $1100 to $1500 range.

If my alcoholic buddy can rip apart ford auto transmissions to fix them for a couple hundred bucks in parts, a transmission shop should be able to fix a stuck solenoid for a grand.

There is some good info on Salvage titles here and on Google. I was looking at a 2012 with a Salvage title for my stepson and did some research. DON'T DO IT!!!!! That is unless you are doing a build, or intend to do all work at your own expense. Dealers, Insurance etc. won't touch them for any reasonable price.
There are probably some guys going to jump in and say they have had great ones. Good for them. Looks like you found out I'm correct.

Keep us posted on your results.

FWIW I replaced a pressure control solenoid on a 68RFE. The part was less than $400 and it took me about 4 or 5 hours to complete.

I checked on the price for the AC60F PC solenoid and they are less expensive than that.

I definitely need to at least drop the pan and check the Pressure control solenoid. I just hope a transmission shop will be more willing to figure out the problem instead of just jumping to the most expensive and easy thing they can think of. I just don’t trust the dealership.
As for buying a salvage title yes it was a risk I took and am paying for it now, but The truck has been Flawless For 32,000 miles. I think the true issue is that Toyota has a very pore design on the 3rd gen Drive train. There are so many people unhappy with way they drive and shift.

www.car-part.com I found a couple dozen used transmissions within 250 miles all ranging from $800-1500.. all depends on year, and mileage. but find out what the trans shop says.. may be able to free it up, and clean the bore..

While people do complain, the transmission has been really reliable from anecdotal data on this forum. I don't think you can blame it on the design right now.

Your problem is unrelated to that, just because a minimal number people on Tacomaworld don't like the way it shifts doesnt mean Toyota has a driveline problem or the transmission is bad.

The true issue is you have an anomaly which isn't necessarily ruled out from the fact that the vehicle was salvaged. My wife's impreza had a tranny go at 60k and Subaru replaced it under warranty and it's been flawless for the past 100k miles, sometimes you just get unlucky.

    This.

Though my anecdote is the POS Ford focus.

Wife is on her 3rd clutch, 2nd trans under 50k miles.

Edit: they did a 150k mi 10 yr on the trans because of how many issues are coming from it.

As stated above, junk yard transmission with the lowest mileage you can find, new filter and fluid. What, maybe 2 grand max?

The complaints are generally rectified with retuning the ECU and/or re-gearing the diff, absolutely nothing with the actual design of the trans. It's kind of a stretch comparing your mechanical issue from a salvaged truck to that.
Really, this is the first post I've even seen about a failed transmission of any sort in a 3rd Gen.

sounds like he is not doing the work himself.. not to mention the new trans probably has to be programmed into the ECU/TCU.... shop I bet will charge close to $500 labor + fluids...

I’d take it to someone who works on Toyota’s specifically. They are going to have to check the harness from the module to the solenoid and work their way down making sure it’s not a wire issue. Then with a wiring diagram and dropping the pan they can figure out which solenoid it is and possibly replace it if there is a replacement available.

Transmission shop in ROCH NY would replace this entire unit with torque converter for $3255.00 plus tax. I am with you on this, as in having a hard time believing the trans is shot with clean oil and only 40k. I bet a pressure solenoid is stuck. Take this to a another shop like another post said.. Good luck and let us know what happens.
