I’d like to know why it failed the first time. And I’d like to know if anyone had it fail, not crank, flash to stock using PCM flash, then did TSB and it was successful.

    Update!

It was the battery voltage. Had to be.

Ran the truck for 5 mins, trickle charged, worked like a charm.

@OVTune how do I find the password and ID to register techstream so I can update from 04B02 to 04B04? I just bought and installed your VF tuner, but many say to do the update to 04B04 to get best results

I didn't know it's pirated... How else do I get to 04B04? I just want the most out of this Tune.

TechStream that we used is pirated / hacked. It depends on what side of right-to-repair that you fall on. And also, that Toyota / dealers fought to give us the easy TSB solution outright.

In the end, this is just an app to get your Taco running its best.

i agree with this. nobody is abusing anything. all of us tried to get the dealer to assist and we see how that went 9 times out of 10. so it's on us to get the file uploaded and this is what it takes.

There's some links floating around to use the pirated version. Alternatively you can get a legit two day subscription from Toyota (Professional Diagnostic tier). https://techinfo.toyota.com/

    Holy necro thread batman....

If it weren't such a hassle to get the dealers to flash TSBs on request, I may have a little more guilt for "obtaining" Techstream. Since that isn't the case, and I fully support right to repair, it doesn't bother me in the least.

FYI, anyone that runs into the same problem as OP.... I can also un-brick your ECM for you. I actually had it happen to me when testing some experimental files. Literally nothing I could do with the ECM in the truck would let me flash it. I had to remove it and do a bench flash. After that I added the required pin and wire extension to the ECM plug so I could recover while it was still in the truck. Thankfully I haven't had to use it since.

You need a bunch of jumper wires, your tactrix cable (and some way to connect to its pins), and a 12V power supply. You need to ground one particular pin that holds the ECM in reset that allows you to flash. Normally this is not required and this pin is not populated in the connector. Connect +12V and 0V to the required ECU pins, and with the pin held to ground (0v), you flash as usual. Reinstall in the truck and you are G2G.

I'm not really willing to share more details of the process publicly because there is a serious risk of frying something if you do not know exactly what you are doing.

Apologies for digging up this thread but was assisting a friend with the 03->04 upgrade pre tune and it errored out at the very last phase of the Cal upgrade. Since then the same error in OP exists. Is there a way to reset the ECU via the OBDII port (like some of the talk about pin 4/13 jumper)?

Does the truck start? If not, there are a few things to try, but if they fail, the only way to recover is to remove the ECM and bench flash.

Disconnect the battery and connect the two cables together for 10 min, reconnect and try again. Make sure battery voltage is above 12V. If it isn't put a charger on the truck.

I left the negative wire off over night, assuming that is enough. Battery level was 11.9 previously I will charge it up. No it does not start it just cranks and says brake override malfunction like the OP showed...
