UNSETTLED SUMMER WEATHER: We note a few showers over Northeast Alabama early this morning, but most of the state is dry and very humid. Like recent days, we expect scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms later today and tonight in the unstable air. Some spots will see heavy rain, gusty winds, and lots of lightning where stronger thunderstorms develop, and the high this afternoon will be in the 87-90 degree range for most communities. The average high for August 13 at Birmingham is 91.

Not much change tomorrow; the sky will feature more clouds than sun with a few passing showers or thunderstorms likely… the high will be in the mid to upper 80s with only a limited amount of sun.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Showers should be fewer in number Saturday as the air will be drier, and by Sunday we expect only isolated showers with a good supply of sunshine. Highs over the weekend will be mostly in the 88-92 degree range.

NEXT WEEK: An upper trough will form over the eastern half of the nation, and it should bring some pretty pleasant weather around here for August. TROPICS: Tropical Depression 11 is still forecast to become a tropical storm today; the name will be Josephine. The system is in the Atlantic, about 1000 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands. It will gain latitude, and pass north of the Leeward Islands this weekend. Strong shear is expected to bring weakening in 3 days or so, and there is a pretty good chance it dissipates well east of the Bahamas. If by chance it survives, it will recurve into the open Atlantic well east of the U.S. The rest of the Atlantic basin, including the Gulf of Mexico, is quiet.



ON THIS DATE IN 2004: Charley made landfall as a category four hurricane on Captiva Island, Florida, around midday and it unleashed tremendous fury on the town of Punta Gorda about an hour later. After that, Charley tracked northeastward, toward Orlando. The hurricane hit Orlando as a Category 1 hurricane after midnight with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. A couple of hours later, Charley passed near Daytona Beach and moved out into the Atlantic. Charley was initially expected to hit further north in Tampa, and caught many Floridians off-guard due to a sudden change in the storm’s track as it approached the state. Along its path, Charley caused 10 deaths and $16.9 billion in damage to insured residential property, making it the second costliest hurricane in United States history at the time. Charley was a compact, fast-moving storm, which limited the scope and severity of the damage.

There’s almost nothing I’d rather do than fish. Especially after a stressful work week. It’s a escape for me that is very relaxing.

a vet tech...for veterans?

 

oh dang didnt even catch that, i saw suicide and thought of veterinarian but that read veterans . Its just a huge issue in the vet world.

 

oh haha gotcha! I thought maybe you really did mean veterinarian for veterans, since they often have therapy/service pets.

but yeah I always said I could be a veterinarian, if I didn't have to deal with the death and really nasty stuff...I couldn't mentally handle putting pets to sleep...

 

it’s not the pets that cause the suicides it’s the shitty ass customers.

Its a combo of both according to Anna. Im her daily vent bucket and let me tell you that alone is a full time job haha. Im just glad she lets it out on me.

 

I don't get these challenges. How is doing push ups suppose to help anyone? yes I understand and get that it helps others recognize about the problems, but it doesn't help people in need

 

Well that was an unexpected turn we took... I could see where it would be hard as a veterinarian especially if you had a string of having to put animals down... But yeah I meant veterans...

The copy paste basically just says it is to raise awareness so I assume it makes people who are friends with vets think about what they have gone through and maybe be more willing to offer additional support since it is probably a surprisingly high number to most

 

I must agree with you.

Hasn't even been 3 weeks since my buddy from high school commited suicide. Army vet of 24 years. Had his shit together, so we thought. Awesome wife & 2 kids. Owned their house on Mobile Bay with a 32ft boat and multiple toys to have fun with on the water or in the mud. Very little debt if any - nothing to worry about. He had a damn good life.

I spoke to him a few days prior to finish setting up our trip down to the keys to go fishing for swordfish. His wife posted a picture on Facebook of him, her and kids at their farm shooting for a typical lead therapy session. Apparently he stayed to clean up brass and she left. He never came home that day. No note, nothing left behind but questions.

 

Veterinarians have one of the highest suicide rates among professional careers. Sometimes three times higher than the general population.
And I don't understand the 22 pushups a day going around. If you're a veteran would it not be better to focus your time and energy on reaching out to 22 other veterans you served with just to check in with them?

 

that could be the challenge, have a great conversation and then tell them at the end to pass it along and check in on those you're thinking about.
