Manual transmission alone not much help, but with the 4.30 gears that come with it is a big improvement. Automatic should come with these and there wouldn’t be any complaining

Edit. Please see my update below.

You can disable the adaptive cruise and make the system run as regular cruise control. Just turn on the cruise control. Then push the stalk away from you a few seconds until the radar symbol goes away and a regular cruse symbol appears.

Honest question. What NA gas engine made peak torque at 2300 RPMs? The 4.0 peaked at 4000 RPMs and I think my 5.3 V8 before that was somewhere are 4000 as well.

I use the cruise control daily and I don't notice a problem at all. The adaptive cruise is annoying as hell in traffic.

I am coming from cruising in a E350 Mercedes and I don't find any fault in this way this truck drives.

I like the adaptive cruise but it can get annoying. Like when you look down at the speedometer and realize you've been running 54 mph in 65 zone behind some slowpoke for the last 20 miles. :anonymous:

Saying for a friend of course.

Pretend you're driving a car. The engine loves to rev and will do so freely. only time i go above 4th is highway above 70 and long flat roads. Once you get used to it, it's quite a blast to drive.

Shortly after buying my 17 Tacoma in late 2016, I went on a 9 hour road trip to attend my best friends wedding. Never used the idea control before that in the truck. I turned it on and after about 45 seconds I shut it off. My buddy was like wtf was that? I told him I didn’t know what the hell the truck was doing. Bouncing between 4th, 5th and 6th Somewhere around 75Mph. Even tried slowing down a bit and it was still all over the place. On completely flat highway in the middle of Ohio. Completely awful. I mean the truck itself drove like crap but the cruise was god awful. When I got home I took over to the Toyota dealer (worked for an auto group) they did a reflash and the cruise was better after that but still pretty lousy overall. Can’t believe on the 2020’s this is still a problem. I certainly won’t miss how my truck drives once it’s gone. That’s for sure.

Yeah that's my problem. I like the adaptive cruise and I like how you can set the following distance. Problem is I can never maintain a consistent speed.
I am always matching the yahoo in front of me who is invariably poking along. Then I change lanes and vrooooom off I go lol.

In the 28 years I have been driving I have had one speeding ticket and no accidents. Need to knock on wood.

    =)

You know 278 HP is no slouch. This V6 is a peppy little engine. If these trucks weighed a bit less they would be pretty quick.

I do think it's time for a new transmission in the Taco's tho. 6 gears is so early 2000's.

I've never thought it had too little power. I can appreciate that people want more, but this thing more than enough the way it is if you allow yourself to push it a bit. Off the line, it can be very quick, and just listen to the pur and cough of that v6

The stalk doesn't push forward like in a Lexus. Sorry. With Cruise off, push and hold the on button to disable the adaptive.

Don't know how old you are, but Life is a lot more enjoyable once you drop the 'perfection' requirement. It soothes Tacoma problems and many others that might currently plague you. Just sayin....

    Step 1: Turn on radio
Step 2: Turn volume knob over volume 30
Step 3: Take a big post-it note and place on it the tach

    And that's all the steps.

I have to watch the speed my truck does when the OD is off. It will cruise very freely at 70 mph in 6th...with the od off it can get away very easily.....you can be doing close to 80 in no time without any effort.

    Search for ShiftSense.

I bought a used one here from the classified section for about $100. Quick plug and play install. If you don't like it, put it back up for sale.

I love mine. Tranny no longer hunts for gears and when I'm off the throttle it no longer shifts into 6th.

The list is long but distinguished
Lots of older engine designs were making peak power @3000-4000 rpm with max Torque @1000-2000 rpm (GM was pretty famous for this). More modern engines tend to get that max torque up closer to the rpm range and with our 2GR-FKS its 278 hp at 6000 rpm and 265 lb⋅ft at 4600 rpm. Managed fuel & ignition timing systems with variable valve timing allows for more efficiency out of the engine but when you're cruising at speed around 2000 rpm the ECU is going to want to kick that up to get the engine to make efficient power.

From my experience with cruise control it seems to kick up and hold high rpms (4500+) when there is a load which for me is on 80 through the Sierra's. I usually turn it off when that starts happening.
