OP frequents, apparently just doesn't share updates in his/her own post.

come on OP @Mulligandog don’t leave us like that!
I have been reading other post and it seems that all point to the Camshaft position sensor. I will replace it tomorrow I don’t want to be driving down the freeway and having my truck stall

please take it to a dealer and have them submit the problem to corporate so they can realize this needs to be a recall. They couldn't find anything wrong with my truck smh

Hello everyone!! This just happened to me. It shows the alert of high temperature in the transmission fluid and the truck just turned off. I only have a month with my truck. Is a 19’ TRD Pro. If anyone can say anything. I appreciate it. Thanks a lot!

ECT prevents the torque converter from locking until you reach a higher speed. this would cause higher transmission temps versus not using ECT mode. but the transmission couldn't possibly overheat from driving one mile...are you sure that's all she drove?

I have my 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro at the dealer now; was only a half quart low on oil but they don't have an answer as to why it turned on. I was just driving down the road and the light popped on, I live in Iowa where it's cold right now and if it sits over night i can get about 10 miles before it will flash on the dash. My truck doesn't shut off or anything but the chime is really annoying to listen to. So far the tech doesn't have an answer and is reaching out to Toyota for direction. They said they want me to authorize a 1200 to have them drop the pan; they think it's either the wiring harness or possibly the valve body. I told them to hold off until Toyota can give me a more definitive answer as to whats going on. Luckily I have a second vehicle I can drive.

Just an update on my experience with this warning. I got the warning Aug 13, 2020.
Got paranoid and bought the Camshaft position sensor the next day. Long story short, I never got the warning again so the new sensor has been on sitting inside the glove box compartment since then.

Toyota finally got back to the dealership; sounds like they said it's the transmission temp sensors with wiring harness that is the issue and needs replaced. $1300. Apparently they have 2 other Tacoma's in there with the same problem.

I didn't pay the 1300 to see if it was the temp sensors because I had a feeling they never drove it again after adding 1/2 a quart of ATF. So I went and got it, no more light. Not sure I'll be dealing with them again. I've read a few different places on the internet and it seems like checking and/or adding fluid should be everyone's first step.

if it does happen and it’s not the fluid, maybe the tranny thermistor is giving bad measurements? One could use a IR spot thermometer and check it manually (shoot the tranny with it) next time the light comes on?
