Story Time with Gritto.

One time I was at Hawk Rock above Duncannon.
This was before I got my smart phone, so no video...sorry.

Anyway, two A-10s made a circle around me.
Low altitude, so they were level with me and pretty close.
I was amazed how relatively quiet they were...nothing like that F/A-18.
Twin turbofan engines...more of a whining sound and a low whoosh.
They were almost on top of me before I heard them.

I dunno why or how they became known as Warthogs.
They ain't that ugly.
The official name of Thunderbolt II is perfectly appropriate.
Named after the WW2 fighter/ bomber P-47 Thunderbolt.

When air supremacy was gained in 1944, the Thunderbolts were just about out of their proper line of business.
Not wishing to let an asset go to waste, the Air Force tasked them with ground attack fighter/ bomber role.
The air-cooled radial engine was less vulnerable to ground fire (having no radiators) than, say, the P-51.
Many returned safely to base with entire cylinders shot away.
And it turned out to be a ferocious tank buster.
Just like its namesake...
