who went fishing this past weekend??

I went on a camp & catch chasing the Colorado Native Greenback Cutthroat. I caught 3 on a fly and bubble rig and missed a a good number of bites due to mis-setting the hook when the tension goes to the bubble. When i came home, my new fly rod was sitting at my door. Let the loops begin!

Below are a few pics of

    @andrewtheadventurer Nice!

Not sure I'll get to it this year, but the golden trout is on my hunt list.

FYI, came across a pic somewhere that showed a golden caught in Old Dillon Res. So, while CPW considers the effort a failure, there are some still in there in spite of the cutthroat stocking either last year or this year.

    Nice catch!
I believe the Golden are a California strain.
    What rod did you get?
I fished on Sunday, hit the Akansas near Browns Canyon. Fished decent. Water was moving pretty good, near 700cfs. Unwisely pushed my comfort level and crossed the river, nearly swept me when I hit waist deep. No pics, I ruined the phone wading across.

Damn! That’s one of my favorite areas in the state, but I can’t imagine crossing right now. I fished the Ark a little Sunday as well and it was moving.

    Edit: Glad you’re ok, obviously!

Yeah, my understanding was CPW "lucked" into a batch of Golden and put them there. Now there focus is more environmental and restoring the Greenback here. I know several who 5 years ago said it was all you catch up there but when I scouted it, the guys fishing said they fish it all the time and never have seen one. Also, Very exposed to sun, windy and sits in a bowl that doesn't allow a backcast (far from ideal for fly fishing).

California is my understanding like @Fix14wd says.

Glad you made it out better than your phone!

Echo Traverse 6wt. According to a couple shops, it is on par with the orvis clearwater and i found a traverse combo kit on sale for $220 so it was a heck of a bargain. Went casting last night for the first time and boy is that motion unintuitive. The water provides alot more resistance to the fly line than i expected and i need to pause longer during my upcast.

There are definitively goldens in Old Lake Dillon but they are picky and tough to catch. I normally hook one or two when I go up there but landing them is a different story. Golden's go nuts when you hook them and are good at shaking the hook. Here are a few from earlier this summer.

That's good to know, and may explain my experience. I stuck around my one visit into the early evening to see if the rising would pick up, which it did. I hooked only one on a dry, and snapped off on me pretty quick. I could have poorly tied my knot, or had an ate-up tippet, or something else... but I'd like to stick with thinking I hooked into a golden and it won. :)

These guys are out of Montana and usually have great fall clearance sales on everything.

Yup! I spoke with a WMA person at Zimmerman Lake and was inquiring about the lack of fish in the lake. His response was that their spawn count this past year was extremely low and they believe the fish are escaping into the poudre. They chip all the fish and have setup chip readers at the outlets to track the escapees. Life finds a way!

I went fishing at 11mi with my new fly rod. Had a take on a small trico but the fish decided he didnt want it faster than i could set the hook. No takes for the rest of the day on dries or subsurface flies. I have alot to learn about fly fishing and i am excited to get out on the water again this weekend.

I might do some bluelining in Clear Creek county on Sunday, if I get enough flooring work done to reward myself. Kids start on-line school next week, so banging away on the vinyl flooring while they're trying to do that isn't helpful to them.
