@StayinStock , I had to give up bow hunting when I had to start wearing bi-focal glasses. I just couldn't focus on my sight pins anymore. I was also having problems with my right shoulder drawing the bow. I was really pissed when I sold my last setup. In my humble biased opinion, Mathews makes some of the finest bows ever made. Their pricey, but in all the years I shot and bow hunted, I never had any failure with my equipment, failures with myself, that's another story. I always enjoyed the piece and quiet of hunting and the challenge it presented. Maybe one day, I'll be able to crossbow hunt, we'll see.

Hell...I’ve been bow hunting for 46 years and I’m still learning. As far as crossbows go, thanks to arthritis in my hands and shoulders, I started using one last year. Put a nice lighted scope on it and you’ll be surprised at how good you can see it.

I dunno, she works there too, as a clerk.
That's how she knows just how pissed the other women are.

Mrs Gritto is one tough cookie.
She taught science classes in middle school.
Administration didn't back up teachers on discipline. (This is more widespread than most people realize).
Kids would be taken out in handcuffs one day and be back a few days later.
It was affecting her health, so I bought out her last year so she could get her full pension.

After that, her clerk job is like... easy peasy.
She very much enjoys working with the gals.
And she agrees with me as to covid-19 not being (so far!) sufficiently serious as to (recklessly?) tank the economy.
    Just our opinion. :notsure:

I intend to give my job another year at most.
That's when I hit full retirement age and will claim Social Security.
Mrs Gritto may very well stay longer.

I can relate to enjoying the challenge.
Bow hunting wasn't my thing...I was a fanatical Ruffed Grouse hunter.
I hunted them alone without a dog.

Just being out there in the woods with a purpose was the thing.
Hiking is a whole other thing, it doesn't have the challenge to sharpen you up.
I had to learn their habits, what food they were after at different times, how to approach likely cover...

It was all the sweeter when I managed to down one from time to time.
But how many I bagged was almost irrelevant.
If you know what I'm getting at...

crossbow, there are many options out there.

I had to get a permit in murrilin, to be able to use a crossbow, so I did, like 10-11 yrs ago, 2 years after I got my permit, murrilin dropped that, so now anyone can use a crossbow. 10 11 years ago, I bought a 10pt crossbow, that has a crank to draw with, I use it for blackpowder, as well as bow season, just a devastating weapon, accurate as hell, I have bagged about 18 deer during this time period, and every, single, bolt, penetrated thru every, single deer. god awful power.

And now for something completely different...

    Grouse Hunting with Gritto. :)

    Gritto Crashes the Party:

Ruffed Grouse eat a wide range of things.
In the Autumn they eat Beechnuts, acorns, etc.
When there's snow on the ground it's mostly buds on Birch and Big Tooth Aspen.

But what they seem to love best is wild grapes in October.
Know what happens after the first frost?
    Those grapes ferment, that's what.

I'd read funny stories of grouse hunters encountering drunken grouse and was pretty skeptical.
    Until I witnessed it.

One time I approached a wild grape tangle and several grouse exploded out of cover...one at a time.
The first one clipped some branches and did a dipsy doodle just as I shot.
    Bang! Miss.
    Second one..same thing.
Third one takes off as I stand there with an empty double barrelled shotgun.
He flew slam bang into a tree.
As I'm trying to reload, he collects his wits and takes off again.
    Fuck.

Piss On You, All You Goddamn Grouse:

This time I'm hunting with a friend, which I rarely did.
We hunt for a while with no luck.
My buddy stops to take a leak.
You know what's coming, don't you?

A grouse chooses that moment to flush from the far side of the oak tree he's pissing on.
He fires three shots from his pump gun...all misses.
    With his Wang hanging out.
    I witnessed the whole thing.
"Don't you fucking laugh", he said.
    Who, me?

    Gritto Meets the Undead:

Same day, a little later, we're walking at ease through an open section of woods, very scant cover.
"Ain't gonna flush any grouse here", my buddy said.
Naturally, one flushes just then, at extreme long range.
I fire a hasty shot...and down he goes.
    "You fucker", he says.

I put that grouse in the bag on the back of my hunting vest.
We continue hunting and ten minutes later, that "dead" grouse comes to life.
He's flapping like crazy trying to get out and I'm trying to reach in and grab him.
I finally manage to get hold of him and wring his neck.
On examination, it seems he got beaned by a single shot on the back of his head.
    Knocked him out cold.

Brings new meaning to the term: "Golden BB".

I have to agree with 1buzzbait, these new crossbows are bad ass. There's one built on an AR15 type platform.Way too much money for my blood, but from what I've read, bad to the bone. 350ft/ps is nothing these days. I remember when 280 ft/ps was a big wow factor, then they hit 300 and never stopped progressing. I'm going to trade my older crossbow into my local archery shop, since I know the owner, and hopefully she'll get me a good deal.

I'll tell you a little story about being retired, the days of the week become meaningless. Have the time I have to look at a calendar to know what day of the week it is. It's the only way I can keep track of when my dr. appointments are. In reality I think this is a good thing, since we don't have to get up every day and work for the man to pay taxes. Half the time I don't really care what day it is.
