Well, both of the boots are leaking a little and there has been this clunk I couldn’t place near lock when I bump out of the driveway or turning while wheeling.

I assumed it was suspension some how, like the one time I drove for a little while with one of my spindle bolts not fully tightened (dumbass :anonymous:). I have taken the suspension apart a half a dozen times the last two months so I thought it could have been user error somewhere.

So I took it to a a Toyota specific Off-road shop. They told me that the rack shaft and likely inner tie rod was bent and has deformed the bushing causing the leaking and the clunk.

I’m a so-so mechanic so am taking their word for it. But all the maintenance I’ve done to my suspnsion already me had me thinking it might be steering.

I’m just getting into harder wheeling and craving larger tires. Which is why I am considering a steering upgrade of some sort (JD Fab, Marlin, Solo Motor Sports).

Get your rack fixed and spend $1200 on that JD slide rack and you’ll probably never have another steering issue again. Especially with the heimed tie rods. I’m drooling just thinking about that thing

I was thinking about that and their LCA pivot so I don’t have to cut more to fit the 35s

I think you’re still going to have to cut more. Everyone wants to run 35’s but no one wants to beat/cut up their truck. I think it’s gonna be required either way

Maybe. I already did a substantial CMC, pinch weld flatten, pulled flares and liners and trimmed the edge of my fenders to fit my 295s on the SCS 3.50" BS -25mm offset wheels. And am planning to do a 1.5” fender trim anyways. I was hoping the 1” gained from the pivot would save me from having to tub much.

The wheel wells are not large enough for 35s. You will either need to limit uptravel or tub. If you do the LCA mount kit it moves the rubbing from firewall to top of fenderwell. I suggest doing a cab mount relocate and smashing your firewall more, you'll still rub, but it'll be less.

Much cheaper than RCVs... I tell you though it all seems appealing after finding out I bent my steering rack shafts... I have a feeling I will be pushing my CVs and steering harder in the future even more.

Not really. Look at what the typical overlander instafamous truck has

    $3000 worth of aftermarket bumpers
    $1500 in lights
    $2000 on a tent
    $1000 drawers/misc cooking gear
    $5000 on suspension
$2500 wheels and tires. Need I go on?

The JD kit for axles & slide steer rack is about $2500 OTD & when you consider how much it costs to replace/repair a single steering rack or replace an OEM axle. That $2500 pays for itself. @81Trekker has great pricing on the stuff that is designed to make Our lives so much easier by reinforcing the weak points of these trucks. He is offering products that have been needed so badly since 2005 and even earlier

Oh trust me I know how awesome and groundbreaking his stuff is. I’m just saying I just replaced my cvs for the first time in 90k miles, i don’t crawl my truck very often. I also see your point regarding money priorities and that $2500 in the grander scheme isn’t that bad. But it also seems like something I couldn’t install myself, so that tacks a little more money on.

I called them for a quote for the slide rack and LCA installed... since I can’t weld. And well damn.

The quoted install hours was shocking to say the least. If you already are a solid welder, their products look amazing and are quite price competitive. If you are not, expect this stuff all to cost a small fortune, since most of it isn’t bolt on.

I may just start carrying spare tie rods and cv axels etc when I move up to 35s. Since I know I will only be harder on my truck in the future.

As for my bent steering rack, I will be replacing that myself.
