Well I don't know what the "rules" are but seems to JD has never tried to be a bourbon.. Pretty sure they avoided that "title" on purpose? Someone else will set us straight.

By the law, it's a bourbon - it checks off every one of the boxes. In terms of how it is regarded among whiskey drinkers? Well, that's where the debate lies.

Semantics don't mean a lot to me. It's a bourbon, but they can call it whatever they want.

Nailed it. If bourbon is America's only native spirit, then JD has to be bourbon.

 Glad you got a laugh out of it. Was just meant as a funny, no commentary on the legalities of whiskey.

Well here's more muddy water... I'll admit that I'm one of those that don't care really.

I've got just a few bottles left to add to my collection and once that's complete I'll be distracted by some other shiny thing.

Must be at least 51% corn in the mash bill, distilled at less than 160 proof I think, barreled at less than 125 proof, and aged in new charred oak barrels. That's bourbon. Doesn't have to come from Kentucky. Heck, it can be aged for one day and still be called bourbon.

Then you get into straight bourbon, which must be aged at least 2 years and if aged greater than 4 (I think??) must carry an age statement.

Kentucky straight bourbon is all of the above plus being a product of Kentucky. Kentucky bourbon isn't anything fancy, unless of course you take into account our clear limestone water, ideal climate (makes maturation happen faster) and history of bourbon production. :)

barreled at less than 125 proof... so why is there 136.6 ECBP and other barrel proof bourbons over 125? Just curious.

Building on that, the reason that cask strength scotch tends to be lower proof compared to bourbon is that the Scottish climate is cool and moist all year long.

Cocktails tonight. Making some Sazeracs with High West Double Rye and a 21 year old brandy. Absinthe to line the glass. Ice spheres are setting up now and I just made a fresh batch of turbinado sugar simple syrup. Gonna be good!

These are the only two I have open so I had to choose. I chose the one with the proof closest to the outside temperature- the Glen Grant. Pretty tasty stuff now it's had bit of time to settle.
