He died in 1943. His sons wanted to pay tribute to their dad with the introduction of the Edsel. It was introduced during a recession. I think it was originally an Italian design with the addition of the horse collar grille.

Also, Robert Mc Namara wanted to kill it from the get-go just to prove he was right about everything. Lots of internal fighting went on at Ford during the early years of it becoming a public company in early 1956. Really the crazy designs started after Frank Q. Hershey left. Then Elwood Engle brought back the Hershey Ford look and business got better in the early 1960s before he left and went to Chrysler.

If Hershey or Engle had designed it, it would have sold much better.




The Hershey fords had round taillights. Hershey brought the round taillight design from Pontiac where he designed the Silver Streak.

I wish to one day own a Edsel. I almost had one when I was 14. But the guy sold it before we got there to get it. Was suppose to be a father son project


Was one of the super rare manual transmission edsels

 

It would be rare.

 

Something like 3% from my understanding were sold with manuals
