15' 5 lug 2wd Tacoma + Boat, thoughts on my setup?

Hi, Ive got a 15' tacoma, 4 cylinder, 5 speed, 2wd, 5 lug. i just bought this boat, im well into the process of restoring it. its an amazing experience, but pretty soon i wanna go on trips with the truck and boat. what do you guys think? Boat ramps an issue with 2wd? any last ditch option suggestions, such as airing down? Any boat guys in here? Id love to chat

The boat is an old Aquasport 170, motor a Yamaha 85hp. this is my closest boat launch, and as you can see i managed to dig a hole in the sand, but the truck did not get stuck. This is because the rollers on the old trailer failed, i had to reverse and brake to jolt the boat off a few times. Ive already converted the trailer to bunks. please leave me any thoughts!

 

I'd look for a steeper ramp. With bunks(also rollers) you will need to back the trailer until the trailer wheels are almost submerged to float the boat. From the looks of that picture I don't think you will have enough traction to get out.

 

Slippery algae covered ramps were my biggest issue when I had two wheel drive. I never got stuck. People like to help. Have somebody push or jump in the bed for traction.

 

Assuming the boat and trailer are within max tow limit for your truck you shouldn’t have a problem on moderate incline concrete ramps. On steep ramps or ramps with algae or in winter icy conditions then you may have problems and spin the tires. Having a couple guys sit in the back of the truck will help your traction up the ramp. Launching on dirt or sand ramps with 2 wheel drive is always potentially a problem. Not every time but you will occasionally get stuck. Just make sure there is someone around to pull you out when launching on dirt/sand/mud.

 

I just got stuck today on my ponds awful sand boat launch. I backed in where it was nearly to the door sill and the boat was still dry. neighbor came with his ram 1500, pulled me out, took the trailer and backed me over 100ft in to get the boat off. very thankful for that. ill give an update when i try a real boat ramp.

 

I just barley got out with the empty trailer there, wouldn't have been able to with the boat. This is the only public launch on the lake. im gonna ask around to use somebody's private launch next. ive since converted the trailer to bunks those rollers were shit

 

All our local ramps are deep enough I was able to float a 17' tracker and still keep my rear tires dry.
I think you've got a weight/shallow thing going on.
Hate to say it but I think you'll need a lighter boat or bigger truck.

 

Can you put a longer tongue on the trailer?

 

Maybe swap the third member for one from an automatic.

 

+1 Longer tongue. You might also consider a swing tongue if you park it in the garage.
