Get a twin stick from a manual FJ, lock out the front diff.

    BOOM full time 4x4.

That sucks that it's a 2 wheel drive, definitely return it.

Just an update, I took the truck back to CarMax and sat down with a manager. They were extremely apologetic/embarrassed and made the return process quick and painless.

So I’m back to square one with trying to find a Quicksand 4x4 double cab, but at least I didn’t get stuck with the 4x2. Thanks everyone for your help

Very glad you were able to return it without a bunch of BS. If you haven't already done so, looking over all the differences in the Tacoma trim levels can be a good starting point in making a decision. For example, I went with the TRD Off Road, because 4X4 was important to me as well, and the OR has a rear diff locker. I found a good write up on the differences here, that I used when i was researching it. Lots of other sites have similar comparisons as well. Good luck!

    Where do you live Brett?
My father lives in Santa Fe, NM and he had to travel to Denver to buy a DCSB OR Tacoma. Don’t be put off in traveling to find what you want. Hold out until you get what you want too, don’t settle.

They had a few quicksand 4wd double cab long, and short beds up here in new england before the pandemic, but their gone now. Dealers are in very short supply. Long as your not looking for an access cab in that color, it should be way easier to find one.

The only reason I found one was calling big dealers. Online didn’t work, it takes them too long to update online resources. I’d call the larger Toyota dealers within a couple hundred miles

you want toyotas legendary full time 4wd? you need to get a 4runner limited/nightshade...or spring for a land cruiser. neither are cheap and both are bad ass. cant wait to get my hands on a 2021 nightshade.

Yes, technically it's all semantics. Full-time 4wd and AWD are both systems that use a center differential (of any type) between the output drives to the front and rear. Typically the name of the system implies certain other features such as a low range or lockable center diff, but just because a system is called something or has those features doesn't mean the fundamental function or layout of the driving system is anything unique. As with everything, you need to look at the actual make-up and features of the system to decide what it really does in practice.

Typically full-time 4wd is used to describe a system with a lockable center differential and/or a low range while AWD is used to describe systems that don't have these features, but nothing about AWD fundamentally precludes them from having either a lockable center differential or a low range. It's all marketing used to confuse and overwhelm average consumers.

The main caveat with AWD for modern vehicles is with hybrid drivetrains that use multiple power sources to drive individual wheels or axles. These are technically AWD/4wd systems, but they don't fit the traditional mold of 4wd drivetrains.

I cant believe they advertised a 2wd truck as 4wd. Very slimey..... but then you shouldve looked for the 4wd selector in the cab. My friend has a 4runner in the limited trim, and I believe its full time 4wd. You do have the option to put it into 4Lo though

I ran into a dude years ago who bought gen1 Prerrunner off a dealers lot and thought it was a 4WD, he thought it was a deal cause the price was a few thousand less didn't know the differance

My manual FJ Cruiser was full time 4wd, it was kinda neat, but I didn't see a huge benefit.
