I installed a new lock for my tailgate handle over the weekend and when I took the cover off my tailgate, I was surprised to see the wire (circled in red).

Is this wiring for a back up camera? If so, has anyone installed one on 2011 (or similar) Taco and what system/manufacturer/etc did you use?

Yes, that's the OEM wiring for the backup cam. Do you not have the rearview mirror camera?

Thanks! I knew there was one out there, just couldn't find it. :annoyed:

I do recall there were 2 cameras. The OPs '07 would take an earlier model than my '13 did. My PN was 86790-04010, so that's the one you DON'T want.

Since it looks like the tailgate is prewired, you'll want to drop the front dome light and see if the wiring is tucked up there to support the display in rearview mirror, which should have been the OE option for the year. If yes, installing the camera and mirror should create success.

If you install the mirror pre camera, it will display just the guide lines.

I don't - just a standard review mirror. Would this wiring work with a screen (if I installed one) as well?

Thanks! Do you know if this wiring can be used with a dashboard display? (Kinda like this: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/upgrading-to-a-later-year-2nd-gen-radio.554400/#post-18059830)... or is that a whole other can of worms??

I believe OEM cam uses 6V but if you are going with an aftermarket 12V cam, you can likely just reuse the OEM but I find it much easier to ditch the oem and run new wiring to the radio.
An aftermarket cam is just 12V wire, ground, and one RCA connected to the cam output of the radio. Power and ground can be tapped into the reverse tail light wiring and simply run the rca cable along the frame up through the rubber grommet under cab driver side seat then along kick panel then up to an aftermarket radio.

I don't think it would be awful, but not as PnP as what I did.

I have the mirror screen in my '13 truck, OE dash screen in my '14 RAV. At night or low sunlight conditions both look fine, and I suppose the RAV might be a bit nicer with a bigger view.

But on bright days, the RAV screen can be hard to see (sun on screen through windshield) and I suspect the Tacoma 'might' have similar issues? Whereas my in mirror screen never has that problem.

I do use both, usually either for back in parking or backing up to an object below my normal sight line. But I never use them when backing in congested parking lots, because you can't see who's blasting down the lane, backing out, beside you, etc. I still turn my head and also use the mirrors.

Just something to consider as you decide which way to go.

I'm considering doing this but it seems a bit intimidating. Do you know if there is a tutorial somewhere? I've looked but without much success.

Which part is intimidating? Have you perform any radio installs in the past?

I have never done a radio install, so really all of it is intimidating before I get started. On the backup camera, it's the 1) length of the run 2) not knowing where the entry point is to the main cabin and 3) once it's in, properly routing it all the way back into the radio area for connection.

Still, I feel like I should try this!

I have a 2006, I dont think I have any preinstalled wiring, but i bought a kenwood ddx375bt, it takes RCA connection, does anyone recommend a camera and mount with wiring that goes with the popnlock handle? I live in SoCal, if you would recommend a shop instead I would really appreciate any feedback. Thank you.
