So I’m new to Tacoma’s and haven’t driven a truck in a while. I have an Altima that I can drop in sport mode and it quickly flies. My old Chevy truck was a V8 and when I touched the gas it flew.

i bought a 2017 Tacoma but man I feel like this thing crawls. Is this normal? I’m like to have have to push the petal to the floorboards to get it to move?

Normal. These things love RPMs. Push it hard and you'll go. They're geared for MPG's, but the power is there. Just gotta coax it out. Also use the ect button.

Keep it above 4600 rpms if you want it to get out of its on way. That's about it without spending 800 bucks for a tune or 6000 for turbos

Welcome to TW. This has been "done-to death". A quick search will reveal a gazzilion posts about how this thing drives. It's not what anyone was used to. Don't be afraid to use ECT and S mode and . . . put your foot in it! It will come alive just fine around 3K RPM.

Aside from keeping RPMs up, Toyota's ECM programming artificially limits available torque in every gear. What you ask for isn't always the same, and you don't always get what you request. If higher RPMs aren't working for you, OVTune is about your only other option.

    Also, welcome!

you can make it get up and go. to start you'll need either a MT truck or some kind of FI. ATs are snoozers unless you have FI coming.

This misses the point...sure the taco moves with the pedal to the floor and rpms above 4000. That's great and all but nobody wants to drive a pickup that way all the time in real life.
What people get frustrated with is how the taco moves with the pedal 0 - 50%, relative to their expectations based off every other vehicle they have driven.

You have to expect a change in driving habits especially if you compare a V6 truck to a full-size V8 and a compact sport 4cyl.

"My new truck doesn't drive like my old car!"

    Shocking.

If you have a petal where you're gas pedal should be then I am very worried...

Yes, it a 4x4 off roading V6 with a shitty EPA tune. Get the OVTune and regear it and you'll be fine...or be like me and enjoy the slow.

This is the root of the frustration in my opinion.

People intuitively expect that the motor can make X amount of torque in a certain gear at a certain speed, based on experience with other vehicles and how powerful the engine feels on the ol' butt dyno at WOT. But when the electronic nanny decides no more throttle, regardless of the driver pushing the accelerator pedal further, the truck feels more sluggish than your intuition says it ought to be.

well...it’s not a V8. To get power from small and a lesser quantity of pistons, they have to be moving, a lot. If you have pistons the size of coffee cans and a lot of them, that’s not really an issue.

Look at an F1 car...Before the current hybrids they use now they were running 2.4L engines and getting 7-800 hp out of them, completely naturally aspirated. That is a tiny displacement for that kind of power without any boosting of any kind, but, to get that you have to spin it at 20,000 rpm and those things idle way off the range of our or most any other car’s tachometers.

Just floor it when you need it, it’ll move along better than you think it will.
