A little too warm for my blood.


On Sunday, the thermometer at Death Valley's Furnace Creek, located in the deserts of Southern California, soared to 130 degrees Fahrenheit, according to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center. If verified, it would be the hottest temperature recorded in the U.S. since 1913, and perhaps the hottest temperature ever reliably recorded in the world.





The historic reading is just a small part of a massive, intense and long-lasting heat dome smothering the West Coast that will continue to get worse through Tuesday.
The highest temperature ever recorded on Earth was also observed in Death Valley — 134 degrees Fahrenheit in 1913. However, many experts contend that temperature reading, along with various other temperatures recorded that summer, was likely an observer error.

 

Really? How does that work?

 

The temp recorded in 1913 didn't have the sophisticated recording equipment we have now. The weather experts are checking this temperature out too, but I'll bet its accurate. I live at almost 4500 feet in Oregon, and it's been close to 100 here the last few days. It's dryer than a popcorn fart, and we've been under extreme fire watch.

 

I'm over it. It's brutal. We never get summer rain, but around 3am this morning we had thunderstorms roll through that shook the house.

 

But is it humid there? I'll take your 99° dry heat over my 92° humidity.

 

115, holy shit. Ya, we've had boomers here too, and not enough rain to go with them. The hottest temp I believe I've ever felt was in Laughlin Nevada at 118 degrees.

 

135 heat index in Saudi. Actual temp was 120 but heat is reflected off of the concrete making the felt temp so much worse.

Fuck that place. Too damn hot. Can't for the life of believe people actually still want to live there.

 

Meanwhile in Arkansas, where it's typically scorching and so humid you can't breathe in August, we had a rare cold front come through and expect arid highs in the mid 80's and lows in the mid 60's.

I've been in both humid and dry (lived in Alabama for a few years as a kid, did basic and AIT in Georgia/S. Carolina, current company I work for has HQ in Houston). I prefer neither when it comes to these extremes. One is a convection oven, the other soggy oppression. What I'd really like is east side, Big Island. Right now, 81f and 60% humidity.

 

This weekend has been a nice break from the heat. Rainy the last couple days. Today it's 75° with 50% humidity. Wouldn't mind this more often.

 

They were using thermometers like this and read the top of the slug instead of the bottom.
