I aired down a 2WD car once to get up a snow covered road in the VA mountains once, worked well. I wouldn’t say tire width makes no difference though, anything that puts down more tire surface seems to me would help.

But everybody seems to think that when you air down, your tires are gaining flotation from expanding width wise and they do but the majority of flotation is gained from the tire expanding length wise. I would consider it a 90/10 split, 90 being length and 10 being width. Watch any videos of the Western Australians than spend 90% of there off roading or touring on sand or old Camel Trophy videos from back in the day. There not running huge wide tires b/c they dont need to. Tire air pressure is far more important than tire width.

Mostly I was concerned about shovel treads vs flatter tread

I wouldnt worry. I run ST MAXX'S so they are not A "flat" tread. Just air down.

Aight, I'd put St Maxx on the same field as Wildpeaks. To be honest I'm worried about the company that I will be keeping. He wants to take his father in laws jeep out, he's not the kind of person that i would think would understand how to stay unstuck or be too helpful getting himself unstuck. It could be interesting so their might be pics.

At the end of the day documenting the adventure is key. Could also be a great way of working on recovery. But let’s hope for the best and you just have a great time at the beach!

I didn't say they would suck in sand, but a 255 is not going to do as well as a 295, 305 etc.

Did you check the national park campgrounds, Frisco and Cape Point? Looks like there is still plenty available.

Depends on the width of the tire a 255 compared to a 265 is negligible but compared to a 12.5" wide there is a big difference and the 12.5 wide will be better. The more you can spread the load across an area the better for flotation on soft terrain. But you're 100% correct about the tire gaining length over width when airing down.

I completly agree that 10.5 wide tire has less floatation than a 12.5 wide tire. But he specifically asked about 255 vs 265.
