I would go with this in a heartbeat. You’re going to have to swap a few components, but it’s no big deal.

Are there any differences from a 2wd and 4wd engine or auto and manual?

It’s documented here on TW that you need to swap the right exhaust header, right valve cover, maybe wire harness and maybe some other small items from your engine onto the ‘12-‘15 engine. If the new engine came from a manual trans truck, make sure you remove the clutch pilot bearing from the crankshaft.

Ok that’s a bit more than I thought, header alone is a ton of money..
I assume 05-11 engines are the same though? Guy said he had multiple engines from different years

You just take those parts off your old motor and bolt them on the new motor. The only part of that you have to buy is a few gaskets and a tube of sealer.

I would jump at the chance to get a motor with no miles on it.

Interested in this fj conversion/swap on a Tacoma. Is it possible? I just blew the head gaskets on my 4.0 v6.

It is on early model tacomas, fj, and 4Runners. Just make sure it’s the same 4.0.

You have a 2012 Tacoma so you have the secondary air injection….so you will need a motor that has that. Which I believe is only the 2011 + tacomas.

the 2010+ fj cruisers have a slight different engine. They have adjustable timing on intake and exhaust cams. Where we only have it on the intake side.

So you would need a 2011-2015 Tacoma engine cause they are the only engine that is single vvti with the second air injection.

the 2010+ 4Runner and fj have dual vvti which won’t work. And the 2003-2009 4Runner and fj don’t have the second air injection….so you can run those engines but will have to retune your ecu.

Thanks! Yeah looks like I’ll have to pay about 35 to 4000 for a used engine with 55k - 100kon it and $800 for the swap

2011 Tacomas do not have the secondary air injection that is only on 2012 to 2015 model years.
