How to Drain/Refill Automatic Transmission

Great source for information - Go Team TW. If I could... I would suggest the motive brand transfer pump as you also use it to bleed brakes as well. Can interchange to use on both jobs quiet easily with a few items picked up from your local hardware store. Just did my drain and refill on the transmission and serviced the brakes.....didn't take anytime with this kind of setup.

Yah....just make sure the vessel (container) is clean and you're good to go!

 

FINALLY!!! There’s been a breakthrough. Figured it out and got it all done. Thanks fellas for helping me out. Temps hit 102 in SoCal today. Guess I needed hundred degree weather for my brain to work. There was more sweat on the ground than tranny fluid. Next project, rear brakes. Can’t wait to screw that up.

I am having the same issue. I watched the video and am wondering if my fluid is at temp all ready. The light stays solid even in neutral. I than did the bone head move of turning it off and opening the overflow. The fluid was warm. Going to try again tomorrow morning when it’s cooler. I saw a few people with a similar issue in the first 10 pages of the thread. I gave up and started going backwards! Thanks. Great directions in general.

 

I had the problem that a few people have had getting it into temperature mode. The transmission light came on solid as soon as I performed the shift sequence and stayed on. I am sure it was within the range last night as this morning it worked as expected. How did it happen?
I needed to move my truck to level it so I turned it on and setup some plywood to drive on. My neighbour asked what I was doing so we talked for five minutes. I drove up on the blocks and turned off the engine. Did the work fast because of excellent instructions. Turns out I accidentally raised my fluid temperature into the desired range. It was about 80 degrees f outside. I know for next time. Thanks all.

Thats not my video, but you don’t need the aluminum tube anyway.

I tried to get it in Tran check mode and put the wires in and everything was flashing and did the P to N and the N to D 6 times no flash of the T light. I’ve done it 5 times now so I don’t know what the problem is. Did it just like the video. Any other suggestions?

 

I just bought a 2014 Tacoma and I came across this thread when I was researching about the trans fluid. The truck has 86k miles and I don’t believe the trans fluid has ever been serviced. I’m wondering if now would be a good time to change the fluid or if it’s a little too late. I plan on keeping this truck a while and I’m really wanting to replace some fluid, but I had an 05 Dakota trans crap out when I decided to get the trans pan drained and filled with only 80k miles on it. I know now that at a certain point it’s better to leave what’s in there alone.

 

I too have a 2014 Tacoma and I drained and refilled my transmission at 80K (kilometres)(50K Miles) dropping the pan and did a back flush on the screen and cleaned the pan and magnets. All is good....the interesting part is in the discovery and many have said " the transmission was low on oil" and I can contest to this also. My transmission was low by 1/2 litre .... made a huge difference in shifting.
Only my 0.02 but I wouldn't worry about if you should but when....I've heard the hallmark seal says 100K miles as the gold standard....so you are still good to go!

It's really never too late to do a drain and fill. Now there might be a precaution or 2 that you would want to take before doing an actual flush. But a DAF? Na....go for it. In fact, I would do 2 or 3 spread out over a couple of weeks. This will freshen up the fluid and that additive pack. Personally, I would go with WS or Maxlife

 

Thanks for the replies. I intend to get the Toyota WS and a bottle pump. Just a little anxious as my last tranny went out immediately after a drain and fill. But it was also a Chrysler so who knows

 

Just make sure you do the temp check correctly and be sure to add more fluid than you removed. This will give you plenty of wiggle room to allow the extra fluid to drain off during the check.

I've done several DAFs without issue.
