The young couple across the street have a thing for VW vans.

Just sent him this (and he confirmed my guess that it's a '71):

    I wonder if it’s an m21 or m22

It’s an LS6 Big Block so it most definitely has the stronger M22 if it is even a 4-Speed car. Could also be an auto with a Turbo 400. Funny thing to ask looking at that photo. Most would wonder if it’s a real LS6.

The one in back is a Westphalia camper. Very chic ride these days.

The one in front is frightfully underpowered and still doesn't have enough brakes. ;)

The one in the front has an old 1776 motor that is going to be completely torn down and rebuilt as soon as he makes room for it in the garage.

I was kidding, mostly. I had a bunch of VWs, mostly before that particular vintage. The 1960 Beetle had 36 HP, a canvas sunroof, and nowhere near enough brakes. The '66 had 40 HP, a steel sunroof, and nowhere near enough brakes. The '66 Westphalia had 66 HP (!), a pop top, and even less brakes than the cars. Also it was not just frightening but downright dangerous in crosswinds. And it had no heat that actually reached the front of the vehicle. Even still it was better than the '66 bug; I carried an ice scraper in that car for the *insisde* of the windshield!

His '84 Westphalia is a pig, but everything works. The new (to him) '71 is a sleeper. The body and interior are in great shape, but the engine, transmission, brakes, and electrical system are all getting rebuilt or replaced over the next year.

I asked him what led him to buy it, and he answered "I couldn't help myself. Plus, we always wanted two kids and now we have them."

I mounted squirrel cage fans into the heater channels under the back seat and added a switch, moved plenty of air to the windshield for winter, no scraping on the inside.

I had a 1969 BaJa bug at the ripe old age of 17 back in 1978. Badass bug with oversized rear inward camber facing rear tires, and a snorkel. First thing I ripped off was the snorkel, sorry boys, those things are worthless unless you are scuba diving. Who does that? Nobody, It’s all for show these days.

Anyways, I came out of work late night into blizzard white out conditions in Colorado. Let me digress: What does an air cooled bug have or have not have compared to a normal water cooled vehicle? A defroster. I couldn’t see Jack-S. Came out of my work parking lot and ran that bad boy up onto a median and high centered it. Seconds later here comes a Sheriff. I had it towed to a VW shop that I knew of. The rear axle was broken and I couldn’t afford to fix it. The shop owner stole it from me for a small price. He then parted it out. Living in a small town in Colorado I was seeing parts of my old BaJa bug on other BaJa bugs for years.

A real popular upgrade is to put a Subaru engine in these things. Double the horsepower right off the bat. Of course, then you’d really need to upgrade the brakes, .
