After picking up trash one too many times after the local family of raccoons had their fun overnight, I set out to build a stand alone "shed" to house the garbage cans so I did not have to chase bits of uneaten, rotting food, etc. each morning. As seems to always be the case, a simple structure becomes a bit more complicated as the build process takes shape. The "shed" quickly was titled the "Garbage Mahal". Which is a title that has stuck to this day.

My 2x12 rafter stock was delivered this morning , Select Structural Fir

Went backwards a bit this morning . I wasn't super happy with the fit of the timber rafters to the king posts I installed on the weekend . The king posts all had a bit of a twist in them so where the bottom of the rafter face met the post they were all open slightly on one side by a fat sixteenth / small eighth . I decided Saturday I could live with it , that it was just too bad it didn't all mate up perfectly but the material was a little twisted so I would accept it , after all it is just a shop , so I moved the scaffold towers and lifting set up to the other side .

After looking at it Sunday and this morning I decided it was something that was going to piss me off every time I looked at it if I didn't at least try to improve the joints . I needed to lift the timber rafters up out of the post notches in order to take a bit of material off them with the belt sander but really didn't want to move the scaffolding back again so I came up with this idea and it worked pretty good . I clamped a board under the crossing timbers near the wall so when I lifted the rafter it didn't lever itself right out of the beam pocket and hit the dirt , and then I got one of my aluminum sawhorses to straddle the 2 bottom crossing beams with a block of wood shrink wrapped to the top of it so it would not mar the rafter . I was then able to lift the top end of the rafter up and slide the sawhorse along with my foot till the rafter was high enough I could work on the end . The tail end of the rafter was between the 2 crossing beams so it really could not go sideways .

Got those first 3 tuned up and re-installed then started on the other side making adjustments to the rafters at floor level before I lifted them up . Got 2 done on the other side today , will lift in #3 in the morning then its on to cutting the 2x12 rafters

    Yeah.
It's good to know yourself and be aware of your own OCD tendencies. While they say "better is the enemy of good enough," if I know I can do better I just can't stand to settle for good enough either. I'm enjoying following along on this, thanks for sharing.

Yeah, that would have drove me nuts as well. Best to fix it now while it is relatively easy.

    Timber trusses complete

I enjoyed doing those but would be lying if I said I wasn't happy to have that stage behind me . My back , shoulders , elbows and wrists are all feeling it lol

Supposed to rain starting tomorrow night till Friday morning so I'm going to put the tarp back up tomorrow and then I can cut all my 2x12 rafters inside on the shitty days

Today I shimmed and secured together the timber rafters and the bottom chord crossing beams

I had only fixed one of the crossing beams to the framing at either end to set the framing at the 22' dimension and left the other crossing beam loose to make it easier to get the timber rafters dropped in between them .

There are a few critical dimensions the timbers need to be at for the drywall to plane out later and also be able to tuck over the timber rafters

There is a 5/8" space between the top of the timber rafters and the underside of the 2x12 rafters to allow the drywall to tuck on top of the timber rafters so we don't have a mudded joint against the timber rafters . I installed a 5/8" plywood spacer on top of the timber rafters an inch in from each edge to allow for the drywall to tuck on top while still allowing the framing to be attached directly to the timber rafters .

The interior of the walls will get 1/2" plywood with 1/2" drywall over top so in order for the future ceiling drywall and wall drywall to plane out to each other at the height of the top of the crossing timbers with the 2x12 structural rafters meeting the interior plane of the wall framing , the top of the crossing timbers need to be 1/4" below top of wall plates and the top of the timber rafters need to be 5/8" below the top interior edge of the wall plates at a 5 in 12 pitch .

    Got all that ?

    Good .

TL;DR ~ shim beams to correct height , clamp and screw together

    Obligatory picture of same ~

Shimming timber rafter up until top of 5/8" plywood spacer on timber rafter just touches bottom edge of scrap laying at interior edge of framing top plates (where 2x12 rafters will meet plates)

After doing all that I cut and test fit a 2x12 rafter to make sure it worked before I cut them all wrong

After that I rigged the Big Top back up for the rain tonight and tomorrow .

Tomorrow I cut all my 2x12 rafters under the tarp

Actually I do have all that. Makes perfect sense. I could not get any of my guys to think that far ahead and asking them to do that would be an effort in futility as it would go over their head.

Damnit, I had GarageJournal forum to see shit that cost me tons of money, now seeing it on here as well lol. Love this man, actually finishing out my external garage and doing an extension to it as we type myself. However mine is just a slab with drainage and runoff being added, as well as following the existing roofline of the existing very oversized 2 car garage. Currently on the dirtwork for the extension, and building my workbenches and organization items for the inside portion of the garage. Have to do the extension to park my Tractor, impliments, and trailer, doing raised roof as will be putting a 2 post lift in at the same time to make working on my vehicles alot easier - the drag car will get the most attention but the 2 post will make the tinker projects on the Tacoma alot easier. In love with your work man!

After looking at your gable end wall drawing, I’m thinking you may be interested in this detail?
It’s an interpretation of an old log cabin detail where they would cantilever the top log out to support the plate log that the rafters sprang off of. It resolves the flat soffit to wall connection with a decorative element vs. a plain wall or the clunky, common “bird box” POS hanging out there.

I'm doing something along those lines with false beam ends projecting out parallel with the long axis of the building at the ridge and at the exterior walls to look like they are supporting the gable overhangs , the soffits on either side will be returned level from the fascia boards and at that elevation there will be a continuous trim running across the gable ends and at this trim is where the siding will transition from 26ga corrugated metal below and cedar shingles above

FYI ~ that permit drawing in the OP has already been changed a couple times during construction

I like the idea of corrugated vs. the board and batten siding. Easier on the maintenance as well.
