Little of this, little of that.
I got you. That does sound pretty nice actually. I’ll download the program and try to familiarize myself with it!

What @Shellshock and @inksin said. I all depends where you fall on the right to repair debate. I think we all should have reasonable access to programmable items.

Esp with OVT, you have all the tools that you need other than TechStream, which is linked in the ECU Update 1st Post or in my signature.

Also, most folks feel a good performance / drivability boost on the latest available TSB tunes.

It's a great tool to have. It may seem daunting to use but it is pretty foolproof so you don't accidentally go arming the hydrolized quantum generator to go off at a stoplight. I even use it to swap between 2 different sets of tires I use to keep the TPMS light from going on

Or.... you could just go to the dealership. Lol. What the others have said is valid. It is good to know your vehicle. It enables you to diagnose issues, possibly fix them, and saves time and hassle at the dealership.
For me though I choose to make an appointment, got in same day, told the tech I was wheeling up in the mountains and the engine would stumble at wide open throttle when I put the gas to the floor. I showed them a printout of the specific TSB that deals with this issue. They had my truck for two hours. It was returned to me with the ECU flashed and a new sticker placed under the hood saying they did the update.
Others miles may very but that is how I did it. This was about four weeks ago.

You, fortunately, got lucky. A lot of people, myself included, weren't able to get them to do it.

On a side note, it takes way less than 2 hours to download, load techstream, and flash the tsb yourself. But like I said, fortunately you were able to get them to flash it.

Same. I had to beg and plead to get my 16 auto updated. I didn’t even bother with my 17 MT

it took 20 minutes to do myself, including finding, downloading, installing and flashing. It takes me longer than that just to drive to the dealer.

it’s a well documented process and all the files are in one place thanks to @tonered

I don’t know why anyone would want to waste time, only for a dealer to tell them no. Then have to goto another dealer for the same thing to happen. Then end up doing it yourself out of frustration and realizing how easy it was and how much time you wasted

I begged and pleaded with my local dealership to get my 16 updated and finally got them to charge me a bunch of cash and do it. Then I finally listened to @tonered and @Shellshock to get TS and eventually 04B14. TS was a little sketchy to get running with Windows Virus Scanning and licenses, but the ECU Update was easy peasy after TS connected. I even got to change how many times the blinker flashed and turn off the Seatbelt warning for the passenger seat where I pile all my crap. Last thing I wanted to do was to have to purchase another ECU License for vF Tuner, so I wanted to be on the latest before registering the Truck with vF Tuner.

Now if I could just figure out how to change the lighting so it doesn't dim when I go under a big overpass :angrygirl:

Yeah, that's why I don't use CC. Adaptive of otherwise. It seems to be a feature that doesn't play well with the way the truck/engine/trans/ecu/tcu is set up. Now my Dad's old Cadillac, had awesome cruise control, but maybe the monster V8 had something to do with that.?!

There's a V8 in the Wife's Land Cruiser and it's CC sucks just like the other Toyotas. It is actually worst when you go down hill and it starts dramatically braking right away - Adaptive CC on or off, matters not. Now its no where near the 500 cu in monster V8 your Dad probably had in the Caddy, but I think its Toyotas in general. My BMWs never had any sort of issue. Not even my Chevy Avalanche had an issue with CC. I'll bet even Dodge could gets CC right (if you could keep them running and from rusting). Ford? :boink:

I think you're right. My previous Corolla's and wife's current '20 RAV4 behave the same. I just figured not worth using, it's not like it's hard to push the gas peddle and I feel more in control - actually driving without the cc engaged.

Even a Lexus RX350 I had struggled very similarly with CC, especially on hilly roads.

This is a normal setting (Light Sensor sensitivity) in the manual (pg 597) you can adjust yourself. :)

Have you been able to do this? It seems like I've tried everything that I can, but can't seem to make a difference. I've changed the values for Sensitivity in the Multimedia system and in TS as indicated on page 597, but how the values really work is not exactly clear and none of my changes seem to impact the Head Unit going to "Night Mode" when I go under a large overpass.

    Edit: See Previous Post (Here)

Just put the head unit in day mode. It will never darken then

It's been a few years since I adjusted it but yeah, I was able to make it happen a lot less. There's one 4 lane wide overpass on my daily commute that it always did it under. After I adjusted it, now it's just rarely. Might depend on the time of year too lol. I'll pay more attention to it now that I'm thinking about it again.

Sweet, post a screen shot of your settings if you get a chance

I'll play with them again and see what happens. I tried everything I could think of and it really didn't make any discernable difference - wonder if it's because I always have my headlights on and its just the dimming of the head unit I'm trying to modify. I've even started to look into making an electronic circuit with a capacitor that would delay the light sensor - trying to determine if I care that much.

I'm also curious if changing the setting in the Multimedia screens changes the TS values. I would think it would, but might be interesting to see.

It's so weird to me that a company lie Toyota with all it's resources can't get this right. it's a great thing that we have @OVTune to make them more driveable.
