Removing "4x4" from mud flaps

Thanks for that tip. Sounds easier than what I'd planned to do. No masking needed?

 

I trimmed my mudflaps today because I'm sick of them scraping on my driveway and other minor obstacles. I trimmed them 5 inches using a template created from the original profile (as suggested on another thread here). This had the side effect of getting rid of the 4x4. I didn't take a picture of the rear flaps, but here is the front.

 

Evidently exhaust will remove it.. then rotate.

 

It's ironic that I see 2WD trucks driving around with aftermarket 4x4 bedside decals and some here with 4WD trucks seeking the prerunner 2WD look. My only dislike of the 2nd gen tacoma'a flaps is the length but I went the route of the shorter and personally more appealing look of the 1st gen Tacoma "4WD" mudflaps.

 

No masking needed. With the raised lettering and a q-tip you can get the edges without masking.

 

Nice. I might give that a try. Did you do it on the truck, or remove them for painting?

 

Nah just left them on the truck and laid on my side for painting. Uncomfortable but worth it to not have to remove the flaps IMO.
