Just sold my Ranger Lariat 2 wheel drive to Carvana For a whopping $36K. The only reason I sold it is ("to take the money and run") If they offered me 30 grand I would not have done the deal. That figure was pretty much at the top of most dealer trade-in figures. So I cashed and started to look for SUVs looking at RDXs and the Lexus RX350.

I stopped at my Honda dealer on the way to Charleston and test drove the Ridgeline......Needless to say, I leased my SUV AND Pick up truck all rolled into one. Lease for the RTL-E is $417 a month, I cashed out the Ranger since it was paid off.

LOVE the back seat area and the bed,

I can tell you. Process was I called them give him the details of my truck via the VIN number. Checked all the right boxes no dents nose no interior issues my truck had six thousand miles on it. The initial offer was $34982. I let that lapse because I started looking around and was undecided about what I was going to replace it with.

When I resubmitted it the offer went up thousand bucks. Don't ask me why. Anytime you can cash a vehicle that depreciated a whopping $300 a month, its a great deal. I could have turned around and purchased a 2020 Ranger! Instead, I leased a multi-use vehicle.

So My appointment came and they inspected the truck, and within minutes the deal was done, They wired the $36K directly to my checking account. I got an SUV/Pick up truck...

They work like other dealers do the money goes to your lender then the excess amount will go to you once the loan is fulfilled.

Is the RTL-E equipped with cloth or leather seats?
Backseat looks tight? Is it, or same as Tacoma?

Keep in mind, shipping a vehicle is not exactly expensive. I've gotten quotes to ship across the country south to north for $500 or so.
    That's marked up.

I'm guessing Carvana is storing these cars in low cost warehouses or on open lots in low cost areas.

I am assuming they aren't holding much inventory. If you look for a Carvana car, they have limited stock of Tacomas and other models.
That's likely nationwide. Rather than have thousands of cars sitting in each city, the simply need to have a handful of models somewhere in the US and keep them there until it sells. They don't ship a car until it's sold at profit.

A typical used car dealer might have a lot of 30 or 50 unsold cars and a limited market of buyers who are in that town (or close enough to feel the eagerness to drive to their lot to check it out in person).
With CARVANA, you don't have to go look at the car. You pretty much know every issue when you buy it and you buy it.

It also appears they are capitalize on the relatively new or low mile car vs dealing with older inventory at lower margins where the cost of shipping would eat a decent amount of their margins.

People buy used cars for almost the price of new frequently. It's people who have been told it's a good way to deal who never bought new and haggled or price comparison shopped.

This must be zip code dependent or something. $38.3k for my 2020 4runner ORP...nothing impressive and i'm sure I can get that at any dealership as a trade in. Offer was only $36.7k when i checked 2 weeks ago. I plugged in figures for a 2020 Tacoma OR 4wd premium with similar miles and the offer was only $32.8k which again was nothing impressive.

I paid about $40.5k for my 4runner last Oct ($44.5k msrp) so an offer north of 40k would have had me considering going electric and looking at a Model Y performance.

I've checked carvana for a bunch of vehicles and their offers were always thousands less than vrooom. Sold my wife's 4runner to them and it was a smooth transaction. For my 2019 Taco TRD OR carvana will only give me 29.5k, vrooom is 33k.

Just checked carvana again and now the offer is 35.4k. Damn this is tempting. I just don't know what I would get to replace it.

The problem is not that the dealers are selling Tacoma's for msrp, it is people are willing to currently pay msrp for a Tacoma. That is pretty stupid to do.

I also wonder what person would pay the CARVANA price for a used Tacoma.

Has anybody sold a lifted taco to carvana? Do you think they would even realize it was lifted? It would suck to return it to stock config.

To piggy back off this, mine is not lifted, but does have Bilstein 5100(stock height), I doubt they’d know the difference, but thought I’d ask.
