According to the Haynes Manual, you're supposed to put the truck on jack stands, then also put the rear axle on the jack, so there is no tension on the leafs.

If this is done, do i still need to C clamp the leafs so they don't burst out?

yes, otherwise the centering pin will be hard to remove. You'll want to clamp them tight on the way back in too, so the centering pin doesn't do the work as you tighten the nut. may be other reasons too......

kinda erodes my confidence in Haynes... really surprised it doesn't mention something that important.

maybe there's other ways, but that's how I did my single AAL install. also, a long 1/4" socket extension will be your friend to stick in the leafs centering pin hole as you tighten them back up. makes putting centering pin back so much easier.

Only if you're going to remove the centering pin.

If you're not removing the centering pin - then no, you don't need C-clamps.

Installing an ALL requires removing centering pin. So yes...you will need C-clamps.

Not to remove the springs. But to separate and install AAL, yes. As stated above.

Haynes is a repair and maintenance manual, NOT a 'how to do non-recommended modifications' manual.
There is no section in there on installing an AAL, or Tundra brake swap, or SAS, etc.

There may be a description on removing the factory 'leaf pack' in order to replace them, but in that case, there is no need to remove the center pin.

yeah but whether you're adding a leaf or replacing a broken one, the use of a c clamp should be teh same.

I dont think so, I bought one at harbor freight, a 10" or 12" throat I believe. You may get that 4" one on there to then relieve the pressure, but once they relax, you will need the space to get them all back in the clamp, and then tighten it down, all back together

Par for the course. I was swapping clutch & slave cylinders on my old '87 S10 years ago and the Haynes manual I had said, "NEVER bench bleed the system, it must be bled in place!" I put [literally a gallon of fluid through it and It. Would. Not. Bleed. Out of desperation, I called a guy I kind of knew in the local Chev dealer's service centre, he faxed my the pages on the slave cylinder R&R, and the first thing on the reinstall page was the proper way to lay things out for a bench bleed, along with the notation, "It is not possible to fully bleed this component in situ."
