Ok so, ill apologize now for sounding so ignorant. Lol I bought a 2016 trd OR couple months ago. First tacoma, first truck. Dealership didn't mention any modifications to the truck when I bought it, they probably didn't even know. I just found out it's been regeared w/ 5.29 Nitro gears front and rear. And it also has a lift kit on it. So lucky me! Lol any general website/guidelines I can follow to make sure I keep this truck nice? Any extra maintenance things I need to do w.it being regeared?

Well, my rear end with Nitro gears is getting opened up for the 6th or 7th time and having the ring and pinion (and all bearings, shims, etc. replaced.

Over the last few hundred miles, what was a very mild (I would almost say normal) rear diff whine has gotten extremely loud. There is some speculation as to manufacturing issues with the ring gear in my truck as far as height and roundness which would have contributed to the diff lock sensor issues I was experiencing earlier on.

Based on a visual of the gears/wear pattern when it was opened up a couple weeks ago everything looks OK to the naked eye, but the whine is now very loud. The only thing that is questionable is the shine on the pinion gear but it is hard to say if that is an issue with what appears to be a perfect wear pattern on the ring. Luckily the parts supplier and gear installer are taking care of everything so that is good. I’ll keep you posted on what happens when the rear is set up again with all new parts.

In the meantime here is a little video of the rear after being opened up and checked out a couple weeks ago. This is after approximately 5k-10k miles.

9 thou backlash is a little wide, but stil acceptable. Did they also record preloads and do a pattern check?

This was pre-“reset”. The whole thing was pulled back apart and a solid spacer installed as well. I believe he reset it at 0.006. Pattern was checked and was good. He did check preload (and again when resetting it) but I don’t recall those numbers. I’ll get all measurements, recordings, etc. on the re-rebuild when it happens in the next week or 2.

I dread changing gears. I hope I don’t get gear whine too.

Does anyone have recommendations for shops in Utah to get gears done? I've heard Agility Customs is pretty good.

Got the truck put back together today/tonight.
Have to relearn to drive the truck. Completely different feel with rpms vs speed etc. Going to be a fun break in period.

It was topping out at like 83-84mph, someone on fb asked if it was regeared, ended up having the prior owner call me and he told me it was.

That was nice of the previous owner to do, and a hell of a deal on the truck then

Has anyone in the Salt Lake area worked with a shop to regear that they would recommend? Looking for a good value for sure, but also don't want some back alley job.

I've heard Agility Customs does them. They're a reputable shop, but not sure how often they do regears.
