Opinions on switching to Mobil 1 full synthetic ... at 120k

So just like the title says . I’d like to switch to Mobil 1 full synthetic and my truck is at 120k on the 4.0 motor . My worry is that it will start to burn or use oil after changing . Right now it does not and I currently use Toyota bulk oil and that is all that’s ever been in the motor . So should I stick with Toyota Bulk oil or mobil 1 full synthetic OR start using Mobil 1 super semi synthetic blend (which I believe is the same thing as Toyota bulk oil)

    opinions??

I guess my 1st question is: Why do you want to change brands of oil? Both oils are quality oils and I highly doubt you or your engine will notice the difference.

I went to dealership the first 6 1/2 years of ownership for my 2012 before I started changing my own oil. And I always have used Mobil 1 fully synthetic since (5qt plastic jug from Walmart) . Next upcoming oil change I'm going to try Pennzoil Platinum fully synthetic. I'm not the least bit worried with almost 99,000 on the clock. Use the type oil & weight your owners manual states. Manufacturing brand is your choice.

You'll have zero issues. Run it. Go to walmart and pick up your oil and filter, much cheaper than any autoparts store.

Why at 120,000 miles do you want to switch oil??? What do you think you are going to gain by switching??? I’ll give you a hint - you will gain nothing, nada, zero, zilch. Just stick with the oil you are using.

well like I said earlier I’m looking at just doing my oil changes myself , so I figured that I’m either buying Toyota oil in the qt bottles or I was looking at the semi synthetic that Mobil 1 makes which would be the equivalent in a name brand . The mobil 1 full synthetic looks like it’s a real popular choice also too

This is the Mobil 1 equivalent I believe it’s a synthetic blend which is what Toyota recommends

So your not a believer that you should stick to one oil alone and that’s it ? They say it will start to smoke or use oil is what I’m getting at

Take the oil cap off and see what your dealing with. Just because the dealer serviced it doesn’t mean there’s deposits. They won’t use full synthetic 5W30 in the 4.0L. Start off with a blend then go with a full synthetic.

I've done this on two different Tacomas, both 4.0. I bought my previous one, a 2005, in 2014. It had 140k or so miles on it and had only seen conventional or blend I believe until then. I ran Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 from shortly after purchase until it was totaled with 181k. No issues with oil consumption, didn't go down much between changes at 5-6k. It did have the timing cover leak but nothing major there.

My current 2010, I bought just over a year ago with 148.8k I think. Oil change was needed anyway so I put in that Rotella Gas Truck synthetic 5w-30 and ran that for about a year and 5k miles. Just changed the oil again today with 5 quarts of Lucas full synthetic 5-30. Again, no problems so far. The oil hardly went down on the dipstick in that whole year. Engine runs great at about 155k now.

Oh yeah, as far as synthetic vs. conventional goes, there are pluses and minuses to both IMO. I like synthetic better, excellent performance for cold weather starts and it can arguably be run longer than non synthetic. A good API spec conventional is fine for most engines though.

If you switch over to Mobil1 I recommend using the high mileage version of their synthetic. It has conditioners in it to keep the gaskets and seals in good shape to help prevent leaks.

I'm a firm believer in using a quality oil no matter what the brand is. No, I don't my change oils like I change my socks. And of course the dealership is going to tell you your vehicle will smoke, poor mpg, fail etc unless you use their oil which if they purchased in bulk it could be any brand. They're out to save a buck also.....

As mentioned just get the Mobil 1 5 quart jug and have at it. You can also get a Mobil 1 filter there they are $10. I have been using Mobil 1 and 10,000 mile oil change intervals the past 17 years since I fit the normal service category. My vehicles have all had the Mobil 1 since less than 5,000 on the ODO. You can change it at 5,000 miles if you like. The first run you want a shorter interval anyways.

FWIW, I've had all the family engines on full syn for years upon years. Car, truck, lawnmower, snowblower......

I avoid the Mobil 1 hype. First, it is more expensive than competing brands. 2nd, its not any better than competing brands. Spend a bit of time to research the oil analysis results of the leading brands and compare. You will likely find very little difference. You are paying the extra bucks for the Mobil 1 name.

Personally, I prefer to use Quaker or Pennzoil Full Synthetic.

Oil filters are a whole story onto their own. Here again, do your research. You will likely find only a few Mfrs of oil filters. Yes, some are better than others. In depth reviews are on the Inet. I use Wix, Bosch or AC filters. Frams fall into the lower quality and lower performance filter bracket. Change filter every oil change. A hint: pay attention to the particulate size and particulate pass percentages.
