AC stopped working, only 36000kms or 23000miles, what gives??

Leak down test will let you know where the pig is leaking

 

I've never heard of that for AC, how's that work?

 

you add a dye to the system and run it. use a UV light to look for leaks.

 

I thought a leak down test was for cylinder compression. What you're describing sounds like looking for a leak lol

 

Ya, that's just adding dye, I can add that, problem is, if its in the evaporator its really hard to see if its a small leak. A large leak yes, but I filled it a few weeks ago and its still cols so I'm just going to leave it. Even if I do a can a year, still way better than buying an evaporator and pulling the dash.....

 

it will find the leak. done it plenty of times, just not on my taco.

Never ever turn off the compressor. It's how you break them.

 

My 2013 Tacoma ac went out back in February of 2017 with about 34k. Toyota fixed it for me which I believe I only a small portion.

 

Here’s my paperwork. My out of pocket was $375 and change. I had to file a claim with Toyota. The service manager advised me to do that because he says Toyota does warranty work for Toyota owners even when their vehicles are already out of warranty.

 

I've got a 2016 and last summer my A/C started blowing cold air, and my vehicle was outside warranty. They ended up fixing it for free which I thought was nice of them, they said it was a leak.
Unfortunately this summer it's on the fritz again. It made some real bad howling noise while running the A/C one day and now A/C won't even stay on when you hit the button. I haven't brought it back in yet, waiting on my next oil change interval.

 

Sniffers are better suited for refrigerators and closed box systems like freezers

They tend to false positive when moved to fast, when air blows over them, or when excess moisture gets near them.

On a car you have the blower running in the cabin and the engine fan in the bay which renders them fairly useless.

Dye is definitely the way to go.

 

What's the problem? Maybe you were expecting freezing air?

 

same thing... my brother is an HDR and he performs this test on equipment all the time... especially these days... Add dye, run the system, look for dye... my brother says its the best way to for sure find a leak... no false positives.

 

Leak down test is adding air to the spark plug hole and seeing how much air is escaping the cylinder / combustion chamber
