Welcome to the forum, I for one am glad you didn’t title you’re post; “Is it Totaled?”

I would go OEM and not worry about price since the other party’s insurance is picking up the tab. There’s no reason to go aftermarket or steel if you don’t have a need for it.
The idiots that love the steel bumpers because they don’t break like the OEM if hit from the back don’t understand modern car safety. Vehicles are made to crumple in the front and back. If you take the bumper off most modern cars you’ll see what looks like simple styrofoam behind them. They crumple to absorb the impact so the G forces aren’t transferred to the passengers. If you look at the picture @ExplorHer posted you’ll see the blue SUV’s front crumple zone did its job of absorbing the impact.
Stick with OEM if using your truck on the streets, it may save your life or someone else’s someday.

Yup hes is wrong. But live and let live lol

Only have like 15 posts so easy to find pics of my rear hits. Totalled a mini van and really fed up a new camery. Camery hit so hard it shifted the bed and had to come off

Crumple zone at rear of truck is at the joint between bed and cab. Rear is solid.

Bumper replacment with steel the fab four was 1000 less cost then stock parts. Had a body shop do the work and i drove away with a check as it was that much less costly.

Granted. If hit a 3rd time. Insurance would not pay to return truck to stock. As its not.

I am not an idiot sir, and you are incorrect about the rear bumper, it is mounted directly to the frame in the same manner you mount a replacement bumper. Please make sure you know what you are talking about before providing advice.

Thanks for that insight.i've decided to just drop it off at the dealership I bought it from and tell them to fix it with OEM parts. Thats all I use it for anyway is highway driving. I only have 4x4 as a 'just in case' feature. Better to need and have than need and not have.

I'm sorry, but you couldn't be more wrong. Have you been under the rear end of your taco? Have you disassembled the rear bumper? Has your taco been rear ended? The factory "bumper" is good for shopping cart protection and that's about it.
So before you go calling people idiots, maybe you should know what the fawk you're talking about.

I hate to say it, but I think he's probably correct. A stiff car is not generally the safest in a crash because it tends to absorb less of the energy of the crash before it gets to the passenger, but I think it probably depends on the type of crash. That said, people drove less safe cars for decades. I see it as one of the trade offs of putting a aftermarket bumper on my truck.

I'll ask you the same questions. Have you been under your taco? Have you disassembled the bumper? Have you been rear ended?

Yup hes wrong as i and others posted above. Hell i got pics lol. But if you want to fix with oem parts. Cant knock the choice.

I did that to, the first time..

Did lose the bed step. I liked that and dont want to cut the new steel to make it work. And the steel is heavy

    Adds protection but not perfact.

What does that have anything to do with the results of crash tests?

Here is some food for thought:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crumple_zone

"Barényi questioned the opinion prevailing until then, that a safe car had to be rigid. He divided the car body into three sections: the rigid non-deforming passenger compartment and the crumple zones in the front and the rear."

Ok fawker just because the bumper isn't made of pillows doesn't mean it doesn't work to dissipate the force of an impact. Bumpers can absorb the force or work with the other parts of the vehicle to dissipate the force around the occupants. They of course also work in conjunction with crumple zones. They also work to protect the occupants of the other vehicles in an accident. And they also work to prevent unnecessary damage, such as shopping carts...so I'll give you that one.
    It's called physics.

What crash tests? We're talking about a tacoma getting rear ended. As far as the crumple zone, where is it in the rear of a tacoma?

Rear of tacoma between the frame rails = zero crumple zone. Direct to frame. The frame bends between cab and bed. Dont apply general facts to this full frame truck (rear only)

Id recommend you go outside. Go to the back of your truck laydown and look up.

As another postr pointed out. The front. Very much has crumple zones.

Cool story. Again, have you ever looked under the rear of your tacoma or been rear ended in your tacoma?

There are not crumple zones in the rear where the hitch mounts that change with a bumper. You not looking is relevant because there is a big ass steel bar between the frame rails that is your hitch. No going to crumple any more than a steel bumper. To the sides is plastic.
