I've covered plenty of things "under warranty" that shouldn't have been. Why? I try to help. Those tools could at least pass as under warranty when I'm asked why I said they were repaired under warranty. I cover my own ass. A snapped tool because you drop it cannot be explained nor pass as warranty work. I hope the other manager replaces it for him because I would hope someone would do that for me, but I'm not risking myself by putting a obviously non-warrantied under warranty.

Nah, I get it. And if I can get away with fudging the numbers and cause of failure, I'll do something. Shit happens and you shouldn't always be thrown the book for it. That's a lesson my folks taught me and one I try live by. That being said, I can still be a bit of a prick
