DIY: Basic Speaker Upgrade- 2nd Gen Access Cab

Can't tell much of a difference between the stock and the Pioneers, except for no more crackling from the blown stock passenger speaker.

Maybe I'm just old and deaf. They've got good reviews, are three ways and have a good size magnet on them. I've still got them on the stock head unit though. I'm gonna add an amplifier and upgrade the head unit soon, we'll see if that makes any difference. Seems like they have a little bit more bass and clearer mid-range, we'll see with the other upgrades.

It's been years since I've had an external amplifier and I remember loving that sound system in my S2000, I'm gonna give it a try again with a nice Kenwood amp.

Oh, and this is upgrading from the base garbage system. Smallest magnets I've ever seen on a speaker, they were about a 1/2 inch diameter on a paper 6x9.

 

Hi, I have an Access Cab Pre Runner SR5 2014 too, and I want to do something similar. Did you get the link and information? Did it work with your original head unit? I want to keep my stock radio. Any info. Will be really appreciated. Thanks.

 

I'm replacing the front speakers of my 2012 Taco. The JBL Club 9600's sound pretty good, but they aren't crisp; that's part of the JBL sound.
WARNING: The driver side was REVERSE wired to the speakers. Pink should be positive & purple negative. Unless you do it right, your woofers will go in a little bit instead of out a lot. Research wiring color polarities for each door before you install the suckers!!!!!!!

 

Been a while since this thread saw real activity, I'm not seeing anywhere on the original provided website to buy a kit for an accesscab, only Double cabs?

I'm looking into this for a buddy who has a 2011 Access Cab with the JBL system. He wants to install some rear speakers into his rear doors, and also upgrade his front ones. Fairly certain he doesn't want a sub or another amp or anything, but he's willing to replace if needed to make it work.

Do you guys have any suggestions on components he should buy, or at the very least how mounting in the rear doors would work? Will he need to cut holes into the panels?

I haven't really had a chance to look at his truck since he lives in Santa Barbara so I haven't been able to pull his panels and take a look at how it can be done.

 

I do believe the holes are there but there not 6X9 like the front doors. Round 5.25 or 6” iicr.

 

Ok that's good to know. He was mostly just worried about having to cut up his panels or actual doors. I'll have to get him to pull the panels and take a look at what's going on underneath.

 

Underneath is no problem. If he actually has grills in the plastic door panel then Bonus too. Watch your depth, especially if you’re orderin’ “high end” stuff. It’s not as deep as it looks.

 

Yeah lack of grilles was a concern for me when he told me what he wanted to do. If he doesn't, one workaround I was thinking of was to just take the included grilles that will likely come with the speakers, cut a hole in the door panel over the speaker, then drill/affix the included grilles over the hole for a more OEM/factory look.

Yea, I'm considering installing rear speakers on my '12 AC. Anyone know if 05-11 door panels fit the 12-15? I might be able to get some from a junkyard if so.

 

Got in my truck this morning to find out I blew the driver door speaker, just the passenger works... I have a 13 Access Cab Sport, so there's also speakers in the back plus 2 tweeters in the doors... I put the fade to the back and silence. so I have one working speaker in my truck now... no horn (broken clock spring) and no headlights, spec d design is absolute garbage with no light output... So, I could really use a good sounding setup. I have the stock head unit, so I'm looking for good replacement speakers all around without tearing out the oem head unit (just not yet)... I'm thinking about going with a hornblasters train horn and I'm getting the new morimoto xb headlights.

 

I'd like to add rear speakers to my access cab. I already have them, and my new heading has F/R rca inputs. Can I just run an RCA speaker cable to the back doors and wire them direct? Or do I need an amp/crossover? I know nothing about car audio, but I'm tired of it not being loud enough on podcasts

 

New speakers won't be any louder. You will either have to add an amplifier, or replace the stock head unit with a new higher output unit. I think the access cab already has speakers in the rear doors and you can just tap into the existing wiring harness. Go to crutchfield.com and enter your truck model and they will show you what fits your truck. If you buy speakers from them, they will also include the wiring harness adapters and brackets for free (you just have to ask for them by clicking the link when you add the speakers to your cart). It is true that you can get the speakers a little cheaper (a couple of bucks) on another well known web site but you'll pay about $25 for the installation hardware.

What new speakers will do for you is give you better bass, crisper highs and a cleaner sound. I recently upgraded the speakers in my 2013 crew cab and I can now make out lyrics in songs and podcasts, npr, and sportscasts are a lot clearer and easier on the ears (the old speakers would give my wife a headache - she finds the new ones quite acceptable). Newer speakers will not be muddy or shouty. But they will expose just how bad the radio receiver really is - even decent radio stations do not have anywhere near the audio quality of the music I stream through the head unit over bluetooth.

 

So heres my situation....15 Taco replaced head unit, front 6x9's & they sound great. Want to put some sound in the rear but my access doors don't have any wiring for the rear speakers since mine are in the headliner. Leaning towards dropping the headliner and re-routing wiring to the access doors.....thoughts?

If it were mine, unless you're using a 4 channel amp, I wouldn't even worry about them.

While I've been impressed with the 20 watts RMS/channel from the Sony MEX-N5300BT running the factory speakers at half the volume of the original Delphi radio, these heavier speakers are driven with even less volume from the radio! Note: the tweeters in these speakers have an attenuation switch, which I chose to set at 0 dB rather than the +3dB setting.
Mounted in ********* spacers, they're solid (HDPE).

 

Just upgraded my access cab speakers to some infinitys. Anyone have an issue with the top part of the seatbelt adjustment? It won't slide up and down anymore. Is there a trick when reinstalling the access cab panel? Thanks in advance.

 

Just make sure that everything lines up when you put the door panel back on.
Something's not lined up. That's what happened to me. I wasn't paying attention when I put the door panel back on.
