Does anyone know if a manual transmission swap has been done to a third gen Tacoma?

Not worth the work. I would check around and see any lots near you have a comparable manual and see how long its been on the lot for. Manual's usually move quick but there may be one sitting around for a while as most people buy auto. Dealer may be able to work a trade.

They put a 5 speed in my SR AC. But that was at the factory. They threw in a 2.7 quad banger too! Crafty crafty

I don't know how much work it is, but I know they're different in more ways that one might imagine. Like, I think the coolant on the auto goes to the transmission as well, whereas it does not on the manual.

swap as in go to the dealer and swap out of that truck for an mt equivalent. you dont wanna go through all that noise. i could see if this was a first or second gen where the truck has depreciated a good amount.

Besides the fact you will be in more money than the difference of a trade, have you driven a Tacoma with the 6 speed?

I didn't like the auto so I tested a couple with the manual and still was not the biggest fan of that transmission, especially with the rev hang.

I would hate to have a manual behind the gears they have for the automatic?

There are a lot of completely unhelpful and mostly misinformed posts in this thread.

@Renegade_velociraptor - What motor do you have? V6 or the 4 cylinder?

If you have the 4 cylinder, you can follow along with some of the 2nd gen swaps (and even some of the 1st gen). Assuming you are doing the work yourself, you can expect it to be about $1500-$2500 depending on where you source the parts. This is about 1/2 what taxes are on a new vehicle in my area.

If you have a V6, you are going into slightly uncharted waters. But I imagine the process isn't much different than for the 2nd gen. You'll need a transmission, engine ECM, clutch pedal assembly, brake pedal assembly, among a few other things. It's doable if you try hard enough, but don't expect to find a lot of answers here. Most people here would rather pay taxes than invest the effort to pull this off.

You realize you said manuals are high demand and low demand in the same sentence. :D

Key word was usually lol. There is a chance one might be hiding on a lot with little attention or marketing. Not all dealerships allow you to refine searches by transmission type which may allow for this. I found that when I bought my 2020.

Sort of, but backwards. On the auto the trans fluid (not the coolant) goes to/from the radiator, the manual does not, as it uses gear lube, for a different function, than trans fluid in an auto provides.

But the trans cooler portion of the radiator is isolated. You can disconnect the trans lines, cap it off (if you wish) and drive no issue. Often radiators for automatics have more capacity, so a common upgrade on manual vehicles at radiator replacement time is to use one designed for an auto.

What’s more important is turning that drive by wire into a real cable connection so that your right foot isn’t control by a computer.

Why is that important? You can already tune the computer to act more linearly like a cable.

But i bet it will never be like an actual cable throttle.
