moutain bikes

I want to get into mountain biking and I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions as to a good beginner bike. I don't want to spend too much money. Just looking for some ideas. Thanks

 

youll have to give us a price range ... a decent used hardtail can probably be had for 5 to 600

 

specialized, giant, trek, jamis, etc all good bikes. Look for a hard tail for a beginner bike.

 

being as hes in chicago, a full suspension isnt really needed out there, i lived in northern wisconsin for a summer and didnt see a single one .... did see a couple in the UP of michigan though

 

Gary Fisher, Specialized, Cannondale... just to name a few.

 

also go to a bike shop and have them fit you for a bike. If you have a bad sized bike you will never like it. Now you dont have to buy the bike there but get and idea of what fits you well as far as brand some work better for some than others. This comes from the guy with 3 mtb bikes down in the garage and one always in the truck.... but i have a problem

 

x's 2. First bike I had was a Gary Fisher that was too small. Always got off with a hurting back. Never a good feeling. Now I got a new Gary Fisher 19", much better ride and easier on the back for sure.

they have good bikes on there. Craigslist you have to be careful about. gotta be able to weed out all the bad crap.

for a new bike, plan on spending around 8-900 for something worth the price tag. get something too cheap, the components are crap and like with one of my bikes, you will find yourself replacing them after only a few months or even one season.

 

I ride a K2 full syspension(cheap/heavy/comfotable), but some of the trails in Colorado can be pretty demanding.

If I was gonna buy another bike right now I would probably go specialized or fisher 29er for reasonable cost, Diamondback makes a pretty good 29er with lots of bang for your buck.

Full suspension has alot of other options

you have to pay to play with that said please dont buy a wally-goose. Right now is a good time to get in on specials that your local bike shop might have going on.

Judging by the size of bike....you about 6'1"?

 

Definitely go for a 29er. Check out Cambria bikes.

 

ride several bikes before buying. I rode Gary Fishers but my friends all rode something else because of the diffence in the Geometry and the lay out if the bike.............

its not so much the bike but the components that are on the bike... a lot of times youre just paying for the name on the frame.

 

Gary Fisher isn't a company anymore. Now they are owned by TREK, and TREK makes a "Gary Fisher Line." My friend rides for em, and they are real nice, but pricey...

For a good beginner bike, I would get the TREK 4300 w/ disk brakes. A good hard tail, with good components, and a 100mm travel fork on a budget ($500-$600).

 

I ride a haro and have always felt that they are well built solid bikes. Mine is a hard tail and it's 100% Shimano Deore components, not the very top of the line components in the shimano line, but built damn well. I put my bike thru hell and back. I have had to replace the rear derailleur once, but i was caught on a bind then a huge ass root got in it, torqued it to get out with the pedals and it snapped clean off. anyways, didn't break on it's own, it was due to the leverage of the root binding it. Definetely get sized, get you some good comfortable gloves, clipless pedals and shoes, and most importantly a helmet.

 

im looking at a scott aspect 40 hardtail for my first mountain bike. 500 bucks. wont be getting it till after the holidays though.
