While i never got to check out the latest frontier trucks, so i can't comment there, but i did look over their previous models pretty well. Imo, they just seemed cheaply built when compared to the tacoma.
On another note the tacoma appears cheap in many areas vs the tundra.

Anyone solve the howling problem without putting MT’s on? You would be a TW superhero.

How about this? Next guy that buys an Offroad model new, bring it straight home, drop the rear diff fluid, add Amsoil Severe Gear 75-140 oil from day one to the rear diff? See what happens in the next few thousand miles. Since most all Tacomas seem quiet from factory, something seems to be "wearing" for noise to start after a few thousand miles. If the Amsoil Severe Gear oil doesn't work, just drain it and replace with oem fluid before taking to dealer for any warranty work. I would say there is a decent possibility using Amsoil Severe Gear 75-140 gear oil from day one would solve the issue.

Did it. Didn't work. I swapped out Lucas 85w-140 immediately when they replaced my first differential. The second differential is louder than the first.

For now going back to my old 2000 GMC sierra with 240k.... with a dent in every panel from the previous owner. Makes it the ideal truck, because i can abuse it with no qualms. Whats a few more scratches? And somehow it’s needed less work than the brand new taco, so... yeah i’m happy to be going back. Kinda sad. Bittersweet.
Most importantly — no diff howl ;)

You would think Toyota would know by now what is causing this rear diff whine and fix the problem. They sure don't seem to care. They keep spitting out defective trucks with bad rear diffs as fast as they can build them. Leaving behind them a trail of disgruntled owners.

I’m sure they know but I feel the issue is a design flaw (or supplier issue that thy cannot easily get fixed) that would cost them a bundle so they’re choosing, like many other manufacturers, to try to appease the squeaky wheels. I had hoped for a fix so I could get back in a Taco but honestly feel like this will go on until the 4th gen gets here. Bummer.

you may need to adjust the lash. maybe not done properly at the factory. or it could be tight tolerances that just some wearing in.

My Tacoma TRD- Sport 2018 had differential noise issue when it was on 22k miles and the dealership replaced it for me after several tests. Everything become normal and after about 10k miles I started to hear a woooo noise for about 2 seconds when the speed become 52 mph to 60 mph then the differential become silent. I left the truck for about 6 days to the dealership then they told me it is normal They compared it with other aromas and they do the same noise that means no issues. I got the phone call 15 minutes ago telling me to come and pick up my truck, he said I am still having the warranty and it is in the system, whenever become worse they will take care of it.
I Really don’t know what to do

Are u sure it’s the rear differential?? It might just be the drive shaft . I have a noise when accelerating .. let of the gas and it stops . Dealer diagnosed it as the drive shaft noise normal .

Not normal for a sport to have the dreaded whine.

Can anyone with carrier bearing spacers verify they still have the whine? Could the noise be transferring up through the driveline and the carrier bearing which is directly mounted to the frame? Maybe someone with a aftermarket driveline can verify if the noise is still present.

I have new gears, a lift, and a OME carrier bearing drop and it is still exactly the same as a stock truck. Pretty fucking kid tbh. I even sound deadened The whole rear interior and back wall and it did absolutely nothing.

I have a 2020 TRD Sport that just turned over 15000 miles last week. I brought it in for service and brought up for the second time the rear end noise when coasting between 50 and 60 MPH. They did a test drive and heard the noise. Upon further inspection, they found meatal in the gear oil. They have ordered a replacement carrier assembly to install. Fingers crossed that this is a permanent fix.
