Thinking about joining the USCG

Hey guys I'm in the process of deciding wether to join the coast guard or not, and was wondering if there are any of y'all out there that could give me some advice with my decision.

There's a handful of us on here in the CG with different skillsets. What questions do you have? I went through the Academy and I've had a blast in the fleet so far.

 

Is it true you have to be taller than 6' so if the ship sinks you can walk back to shore? j/k

How old are you? Do you have a degree? If so what is your gpa? The military is something that has its pros and cons but the pros definitely out weight the cons IMHO. Good luck on your decision.

Do you puddle jumpers deploy for extended periods of time like us squids?

Depends on your unit but yes. Except we don't just sit offshore and do box ops all day jk. I hate digging holes in the ocean

 

Nope...Someone has to stay home and keep the navy wives company. (I keed, I keed)

Special K hit it. Some units deploy on Navy ships, some of our ships do out to hemisphere trips (4-6 months max) and that's about the longest. There are a few OCONUS jobs (Liaison to haiti, columbia, etc) and the boat forces based in Barain.

We've had a few coasties come over and fly with our helo squadron to do gun-exes...unfortunately, one of them wasnt very bright and mistook a window jettison handle for the cabin door handle...lol

 

I agree, same thing, now with a Wife and Kids and Job and mortgage, I WISH I would have done it! Get out and see the world, serve your country.

When I see puddles in the road I don't drive through them for fear that they are deeper than what I've been through on my ship...

Or I throw on a life jacket and then go through it

 

When I deployed to the Gulf on a LHA, the Cutter Midget (I believe)deployed with us.

In the mid-90s, I was part of the TG staff for counter drug ops in Carribean....had CG Law Enforcement detachment aboard as did all other Naval Vessels.

 

my NAVY friend says the Coast Gaurd is super cool! he says if the boat gets into trouble, you can wade back to shore..hahahah.

 

I was in the Marines. Now am a coastie. I am an ME (maritime enforcement specialist). But i was a BM (boatswainmate) and stationed on the Polar Sea it went to the N/S poles. Now i'm at a station and work with the vessel boarding team. so i have a semi wide range of experiance depending on the job your going for. Also CG is cool but if you want to chill and go out of the country a lot do USAF. But if you want to chill and stay close to home for not so long of a time do CG. Just my two cents.
